Can we get a general update from all mappers?

<div class="IPBDescription">since specific threads have quieted down</div>The mapping forum has quieted down lately. Maybe moreso for me, since i rarely go into the CO map threads <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

But either way, lets just get some general updates from anyone still mapping, or with a map in progress that is currently on hold.


I just finished school, and am back into it now on the next version of Nexus. One of the two entirely new areas (this one replacing the right shaft) is almost fully built, and is looking hella hot. I've already spread the map and fixed all of the rooms-over-rooms issues, so i've just got to finish up this room, revamp Engy Halls, connect the vents up again and fix the minimap. This next version will be a MASSIVE update <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    Yeah, I've noticed that the mapping part of the forums have died down, or never really been active for NS maps. We don't need anymore CO maps... there are tonnes, especially since its not as long to make a CO map. Meh...

    Well, not much has really happened since I started my adventure making a map. I polished my layout completely; the layout version is 3.2 (same as the current NS <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ). I did my rough draft before, but I didn't really like it all that much. It seemed to "clunky" and "plain" so I scraped it and started a better copy.

    Now with my new version I got a much smaller size map I think. It takes up 1/3 of the editor for just the lower to middle parts of the map. It seems to be much more pleasing for me in terms of shape, it isn't straight halls and straight walls/ceilings all the way through. Its all null texture, because I'm taking this map step by step for quality.

    Lately I've been working on my map, but before last weekend I never worked on the map for months i think.

    Hmm... I'm waiting for more info on NS2 and the NS2TR. I need to know how the game will be balanced so I can adapt the layout for it. As for the layout itself; I'm making it up as I go along. I'm kind of good at that...

    I'm working to get more detail in and smoothen things up a bit. Still playing around with the lighting... it looks a bit better now.
    I made a 3D skybox for the map. The skybox doesn't fully fit the "normal" map yet, and I'm not talking about the size. The size is perfect. I'm talking about how the cubemaps make the snow outside and the snow in the skybox look different. And I'm using the same cubemaps for both! I need to fix that somehow. I think I'll make two different snow textures. (one with cubemaps and the other without) Oh, and I made the first hive area. I'm not sure what to call it yet....

    According to the compiler, I've reached 7% of source's map limit. (though I'm not sure that's accurate) The map is running very smoothly. I know how to <a href="http://www.student.ru.nl/rvanhoorn/optimization.php" target="_blank">optimize</a> a map. I get an average of about 100 fps. (even higher in most places) The .bsp file is 2.019 kB now, fully compiled. (but without HDR <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> )

    I still need to revamp achio, cerberus and perhaps work on 2bnamed (still don't know a name.

    Achio update is simply a entity system fix

    Cerberus is optimizing and adding another area to make both of the paths from hive to Ms about equally long (time spend walking)

    And 2bnamed has 3 areas, MS, the hallway from the youtube and its damaged twin sister on the other side of the ship.

    I've got a hand drawn layout and some simple prototyping of a layout for an ns map, but the daunting time frame of a full 3 hive map and my current uncertain schedule had me put it on the back burner some time ago. Basically, NS "1" feels like its near the end of its lifespan and right now I'd rather invest my time into improving what I've got (moira) and make the leap to source for any future projects.

    Same situation than BigD. Still polishing <a href="http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=98653" target="_blank">co_minas</a> (yes, combat...) with hopes to have it included in the official mappack, then moving on to a source engine project. Can't wait for the NS2TR.

    I'm currently working on a map series for Sven Co-op, but I've three unfinished NS maps :

    - ns_toccata (thread on board), I can't compile the map, my comp is too crappy :/
    - ns_bliss : two screenshots in the Post Your Screenshot Thread, still pretty WIP, but now it has a hope too be released <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
    - co_mandaris : (thread on board) : Some little tweaks to do, plus a rework of some rooms. Beta 1 is available on the thread.

    you're giving up on a map, because you suddenly dont like it?! an entire NS map?!!

    Man, just revisit any and all rooms, fix their proportions, texture, and go. Fix it up even more with the next version. But, just try! NS maps takes so long, its a horrible sight so see a map with so much potential be put on the permanent backburner because the mapper hit a single snag and just gave up <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    Ah... my ns_crescent map is probably going to never going to be finished untill NS2. I'm mostly just working on it to learn the tricks of mapping before I actually put something for NS2.

    I think the medium "video" or trailers as some of us like to call them. Is entirely not used as much as it should be used. We always stay with the proved concept called screenshots.

    I like what I see Droggog and I think more mappers (and the NS dev team) should put out more trailers as they give a better impression then a still picture of an important area of the map. And moving images are all the more cooler then screenshots as well <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    Now only if I had some ingame shooting skills for video, I tried to do the panning shots in the NS gameplay trailer, but haven't had much luck <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    I'm preparing to make a co map based on Starship Troopers movie. firs i think it will be a co map.

    .... Marines crashes down whit aircraft ( that aircraft where marines in movie landed on planet small landing craft ) and try to survive in desert when aliens surounds them in underworld tunnels.
