Hitreg/Netcode

One issue I'd like to see addressed is hitreg - I know Flayra and Max don't have the time to play much NS, but iffy hitreg has frustrated many players (Myself included) very often. NS stretches the limits of the HL engine, involves shooting at targets more maneuverable than any other FPS I've played, and is very CPU-intensive server-side. As a result, inaccurate hitboxes (More commonly known as "OMG REG") are quite proliferate. Now, consider that NS2 is being developed on the Source engine, which has a reputation for having even worse hitreg in addition to locked cvars for netcode - you can probably see where I'm going with this. I'd like to know how much consideration the Dev team has given this issue and whether they anticipate it being a problem.

Agreed. Nothing annoys me most in cs then blasting somebody and have omg reg. 100 tick servers help greatly though. But sadly there aren't that many of them. Hopefully NS2 will have decent hitreg.

Yeh, shotgunning a leaping skulk in the face only to find he didn't loose any health is very frustrating. Same with swiping when your a fade.

I concur, this is a notorious issue in Source. And we will want quick aliens too, or at least I do. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

I've always wanted to see ns on ut2k3 engine. I haven't been playing it much online, but I think it should have kinda good mod support, proper netcode that has tons of fast moving stuff as a default and also some primitive, but working physics engine.

One of the biggest problems with The Ship is the hit reg. The weapons are almost all melee, and hitting a target that's moving away from you is nigh impossible. Knife fights on CS:S are also the most hacky things I've seen in a game, ever.

Because aliens always have been, and probably will continue to be, primarily melee fighters, something will have to be done to compensate for Source's horrible melee hitreg. That's my only concern.

Perhaps an increase to the interpolation interpretation values? Or give the aliens a little "leeway" on the 360 to melee range?

The UWE team has complete access to the engine from what I understand, meaning they can pretty much implement any netcode changes deemed necessary for NS2. This isn't the sourceSDK that modders use, its full on licensed sexyness.

    That is sweetness.

    Go UWE!

Neg, try BF2 knives. <i>MUCH</i> worse.

Hitreg in other source games feels fine most of the time because players don't move nearly as fast as they do in NS. This is pretty much the same reason why the last slot bug (PSHB) didn't get fixed for a long time - it just wasn't noticeable in other HL mods and was written off for the longest time in NS as bad aim/rates/etc. The point is that when players move very quickly, it is more likely that there will be a significant difference between what the player sees and what the server sees, causing bad hitreg. The OP mentioned this, so maybe you can't read or something?

Unless NS slows down considerably or awesome servers appear and start running on some very good connections, hitreg problems will always exist. You can only compensate with netcode so much before it starts being retarded as well - look at warsaw for example.

The way connections n servers are going i think with a few UWE improvements to source the good quality ns2 team will have this problem solved =D. Not sure about whats going on with ns, seems to be lots to do with server lag n what not. But i do know source has it's problems, maybe UWE can give source some good hitreg code? lol

Btw i have optical and 10m biz cable, with a duo, 4gig, computer... I know it's not me lagging...
