Hackintosh
So I have OS X 10.4.8 installed on my PC now. I have everything working except my onboard sound, so I may just buy a USB sound thing.
And before the mods freak out, my dad has a Mac running OS X, so no company is getting screwed here by OMG PIRACY.
Anyway, does anyone else have a macintel or hackintosh, any suggestions, or just comments in general?

you've created an abomination - such wretched and foul things belong only in the minds of madmen.
What have you done.... save our souls.
mac sucks, please die.
How did you do the procedure?
If you'd like, I can get a screenshot of the "About This Mac" for you.
I'm bummed about the sound, since there are procedures to do it, and I don't want to have to buy an external sound card, but that really seems like the best solution, since patching all the .kext files doesn't seem to be working for god knows what reason.
Anyway, the procedure is, get the dvd, apply the patches, insert, and boot up. I couldn't seem to format partitions on drives I'd already made, so I just used an external USB drive (since my mobo supports booting from USB), and I boot into it from Grub.
Edit: An invaluable resource is the original <a href="http://www.osx86project.org/" target="_blank">OSx86 Wiki</a> and the newer <a href="http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php" target="_blank">Insanely Mac</a> forums.

Seems a little silly to me. What does OSX do for you that XP/Vista can't?

Its not a matter of what it can or can't do. Its a matter of doing it.

my bsd <b>server</b> has a better uptime rating than my windows <b>server</b>. uptime is important for some of us.
on the topic of servers, i found an image of the only mac server in the world. <a href="http://img202.exs.cx/img202/9210/beerserversmall6ap.jpg" target="_blank">BEHOLD!</a>

K, well, a server is different than something you're using for gaming and stuff. I can see good reasons to skip Windows for a server, but not a ton for a personal computer.

Unless you don't care about having every game that comes out and use a computer for anything other than gaming.
I loves me my Final Cut Pro.

Wait.
Wait wait wait
Did you just say that Windows is only useful for a computer that only plays video games? Seriously? Are you living in some kind of Bizzaro world? Can you seriously find me a program that can't be run on Windows (and doesn't have an equivalent counterpart that does)? (Note: Server applications don't count, we all know Windows is behind in the server race).
Do you want me to compile a list of non video game tasks that are almost exclusive to Windows?

All decent 3D modeling programs, and pretty much anything owned by Autodesk is all Windows only. That's an entire industry right there.
I think Cinema4D has Mac support, buuuuut it's a piece of crap compared to Maya and Max

If your windows server is crashing every few weeks then you have set it up badly.
As for the mac server that is the only sane use for mac hardware, trying to pass them off as computers is a travesty.

no, i set it up just fine. windows update makes me restart almost every week for no real reason while it updates random crap and applies yet another "hotfix".
also, cinema 4d is supported under *nix, maya runs under *nix and 3dsm sucks.

Caboose: That still leaves Max and every version of AutoCAD, heck, even Softimage XSI is Windows only...
Black_Mage: Yeah 3dMax sure sucks <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/nerd-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::nerdy::" border="0" alt="nerd-fix.gif" /> that's why it's the most used one of them all.
Before this gets dragged out even more; the point I was trying to make was that other then a few exceptions the 3D design/modelling industry is over-whelmingly Windows only.
maybe it's the most marketed?

Which means it's used by more people? Which means there is more user made content and info available online about it? Which means it becomes more versatile?
Here, go browse some of the 3D art galleries on the net, go hit up 3dKingdom, and browse their art gallery. Pretty nice stuff right? Read the author comments, the majority are all Max + VRay.
So, now I just need to make it recognize my other monitor.

What's your video card? Most ATI and NVIDIA can get dual display with the Natit kexts.

every dedicated render server or dedicated graphics workstation i can find also runs a non-windows operating system (*nix variants including irix and solaris)
