Heya guys.

I had created this map a while back but never got around to finishing it since alot of things changed in my life thereafter. I saved it on a disk and just left it somewhere amongst the stack of computer files I had gathered.

Well now that I've reached a point where I can finally start enjoying myself again I've decided to get around to remaking it. However, last time I booted it up VHE would crash whenever I loaded it, but this was before I erased my computer a second time. I'll let you guys know if it's still doing it and if I could use some help. In the meantime, take a gander and see if you recognize it.

<img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e74/Recoup/Room2.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

<img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e74/Recoup/Room1.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

I'll have more to follow, gents, as soon as I get Steam re-loaded. Erasing your computer is such a tedious thing because of the aftermath! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    However far I got on it, if I feel like I cannot salvage it, I will simply give up and make a new one. I feel like after so many mistakes and fixing them that I just get wrapped up in trying to cover up the problems rather than trying to work on it.

    I dunno. Maybe I feel like something new.

    I remember this, now stop screwing around and finish it <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    Those were how many frames per second I was getting on my old configuration.

    Much better now!

    And just for the record that -is- me (Zavrix).

    I'm gonna finish this now since I'm gonna have to enter it into competition. Cheers, mates. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    Looking pretty hot. One thing though; too many of those crates are perfectly angled away from the wall. How far along is this build?
  • ZavrixZavrix Join Date: 2007-03-20 Member: 60424Members
    How far? Hmm... I'd say about 65%-70% completed. I don't really know where I left off, but I definitely need to work on it.

    Dude, that looks way more suited for an NS map. Suck it up, add two more hives and a bunch of new rooms with rts, and bam <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />.

    Well lucky for <b>you</b> guys I have an update.

    I managed to get this done in about 6 hours (from 9:00PM - 3:00 AM). 1/3 was spent on the ceiling, 1/3 on the rest of the room, and 1/3 on finding all the leaks and plugging them. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    Keep in mind, it IS still a work-in-progress so dont judge too quickly - aint finished yet!

    I'll have it posted sooner or later. Right now it's late and I'm sleepy. Plus, the log told me there was an error and I just recently went back and -think- I fixed it. We'll see...

    With my luck there's more errors!

    And here's the preview!

    Keep in mind that I made it bright so you all could see. I'll get a fancy one up for you soon.

    <img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e74/Recoup/Preview.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

    It's still empty right now but I'm gonna add some nice touches here in the future soon. You'll love it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    I really enjoy your architecture, very nice, now make some great lightning <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

    Definately working on that. I'm at school now, compiling the level itself.

    Ah, it just finished. You guys will have to wait until I get home, but if you want to make my job easier try and find a solution to my problem in the Mapping Error forum.

    Looking nice!
    Maybe it's just me, but I find the ceiling(that touches the walls) a bit bright compared to the rest of the scene? The far one doesn't look bad, but the closest ceiling looks kinda of.
    To me it looks like the lowered floor is a bit too lowered, if you know what I mean. Assuming you gotta jump in order to get up that is.
    And one more thing, maybe it would be cool with some white spotlights from those.. eh.. white lights <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    Ah, I guess I haven't revealed the new, -awesome- version!

    PREPARE TO BE AMAZED!

    <img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e74/Recoup/Level1.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

    <img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e74/Recoup/Level2.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

    <img src="http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e74/Recoup/Level3.jpg" border="0" alt="IPB Image" />

    Personally, I still think there is more work to be done, and now that I look at it you are absolutely right about that ceiling part being too bright. I'll do some experimenting and see what I like. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    EDIT: On a more <b>retarded</b> note, for some reason when I loaded up VHE today about half my information was gone and I can't get it back. Now I have to redo alot of my old work simply because VHE didn't feel like saving it last night even when I hit 'save'.

    Argh, change the HL barrel texture !

    By the way it's really cool, but I don't really like the grate texture on floor.
  • ZavrixZavrix Join Date: 2007-03-20 Member: 60424Members
    If I could get a new barrel texturing then I'd be happy to replace it but in the meantime I'm afraid it's all I got.

    As for the grating texture, that's staying. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    Those all 'trim vent' textures that frame your doors detract from the other texture sets you have going. They are better used as a wall strut such as picture 1 there.

    Your ceiling glass needs something beyond it like a frame of that same trim vent whatever it is texture. If that is a window on the ceiling not just a red brush.

    Which brings me to lighting. Overall I think it needs lowering a bit and increasing in contrast, then make that sky light (as I think I can see some red sky light bouncing down) cast a beam of angled, intense light into the corridor.

    - nice underfloor pipe detail. Try raising the grill a bit, that ledge looks tall.

    Overall I feel that what you have here is a corridor or set of corridors with various little details added on top. What you want is details that define a room. Think about some (if not all) of the rooms in shiva. Giant engines and pipes literally define the core shape of the rooms. The arrangement is entirely convincing and adds to the gameplay massively.

    1. The 'trim vent' textures are some of the best borders for the doors and entryways that I've seen NS's wads offer me thus far and I think they add to the look since most of my level is grey and black as it is.

    2. I actually decided to do a little something with that glass - probably lower it and add a sort of frame around it.

    3. As for the lighting, when I walk the rooms and halls of the level already it seems very dark in comparison to most combat maps I have seen. The room I am doing -now- is fairly illuminated because it's one of the few that is. That picture with the computer console desk? Almost -too- dark, and yet so close to Marine Spawn. Perhaps this room I am working with will give the marines a chance.

    4. Thank you, but the grating isn't too low at all - character movement isn't impieded at all and it's bold and defining enough to stand out. When I last did it, it sort of gave off that "Oh, a grating. Didn't notice that there..." but now you see it. Everyone who's commented seems to notice it. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

    5. Not many corridors to be found here. I'd qualify the second picture (the hallway with crates) as the only corridor I have thus far. Marine spawn is a room, the room with the overhead skylight and computer desk is a room, the one beyond it with computer-walls and a mainframe is a room, and even though this last one seems like a hall, there are so many positions against the wall to hug (and a computer-station halfway through that is fairly dark) that I feel it's more of a room than a hall.

    Thank you so much for your commentary though. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    Quick update for all you eager folks.

    I made this room originally a rock canyon, then erased it and made it into the power network, then erased -that- last night and rebuilt the room. Here is my work-in-progress:

    More to (hopefully) come.

    As for being a bit cramped - it is, but I know if I make it too big people will cry about it not being cramped enough for aliens to hide in.
