Use of the environment!

What i love about HL2
One of the things I like about HL2 and HL2DM is how much you can use your environment in combat. Instead of shooting your enemy, you can shoot the explosive barrels next to him, or crush him with the desk he's taking cover behind. Or you can flip a switch and turn on the fan to gib that greedy guy going for the RPG. Since NS2 is being built on Source, I think opening up this kind of thinking would be a really cool part addition to the game. I'm not advocating a gravity gun, just the quick alternate thinking of HL2.

I'm hoping we can brainstorm. A spaceship that is overrun by aliens and thus isn't being maintained should be a pretty dangerous place.

My ideas:
-Cargo containers. Many maps have plenty of heavy crates hanging from the ceiling. Now imagine if a skulk bit the cable and landed one of these things on a squad of marines! Or if marines crushed an onos or blocked a fade.
-I don't know how you'd reset these, but a well placed shot could blow a fuse box or a gas pipe and kill or maim anything nearby.
-Airlocks. All NS levels are the interiors of SPACE ships. It might be cool if maps forced you to run through areas that can be flushed into space. Even if they find something to hang on to, there's plenty of dangerous flying debris...
-Destroyable walls/windows to outer space. Same idea. In the age of nanotechnology, spaceship hulls seal up pretty quickly. However not quickly enough that a well placed bilebomb or shotgun shot won't get an enemy sucked into space!
-Lighting. I REALLY liked the darkfighting part of HL2E1. I don't know how you'd implement it in NS, but lighting should be an important part. As it stands, everyone just gamma cranks. How it SHOULD be is that aliens can see in the dark, marines rely on sensors. Aliens SHOULD be able to hide in shadows.

I would love these things to be in NS. The only thing that would cause issues are the computing power for destructible environments. Gamma programs make shadows useless. Crushing a onos will just annoy people. However I do think NS2 should have some interactive environments. Moving barrels is just boring.

    That would be so cool!!!

I think it would probably be like that regardless, though. I'm pretty sure the use of items and other physics objects could be entirely interactive in NS 2. Good idea though.

This is a BAD idea, 'cause the marines goes to destroy the Kharaa live form, or witza wersa.

How U can make a HIVE in the Space ship , without Detect before complete the HIVE spawn ??

How to create the HIVE Without another hive in the SPACE ??

or U plant a small-Hive in the ship, and wait ? and the rines can't spotted it ?

These 1) don't address any of my ideas and 2) are addressed in the NS backstory. Its all about the nanites.

About onos crushing... I don't mean in one blow. But if an onos is hurt and getting away...

About the gamma cranking and dark areas... I think HDR can address some of this. I'm not sure if it would be possible in a multiplayer game, but pitch black areas where you NEED a flare or a flashlight would be cool. (It might be too much of an advantage for aliens b/c they can see in the dark).

An idea I just got... barrels and things you could accidentally knock over to make noise would be interesting - that way you have to be careful not to give yourself away with sound.

what about flying fragments when a nade detonates in a group of barrels etc...

The dmg of the fragments should be minimal, but just for the coolness <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

(ofc if its hard to make/ requires alot of cpu its a bad idea)

Such things are only fun when against AI, or the first time the map is played. In the long run people will know where to not go, how to exploit, make maximum effect or suicide runners.

Random non explosive barrels is a good idea though, reminds me of splinter cell mp, if you knocked a bucket the sound came up on merc sensors.

I'd love to see destryable invironment in NS2, sadly the Source engine doesn't have this feature in the same scale as the Red Faction had. Imagine how much CPU power it would take to generate destroyable environment. Hopefully dev team comes up with good ideas in this matter.

Given the system that I've seen most people using that play NS in this community? Hell no it isn't a CPU power issue. But that's what "minimum requirements" listing is for. The real limitation is usually the GPU (graphics processing unit) NOT the CPU. Handling vectors with momentum and fluid friction is actually not that hard for most modern.
