Sprites...

<div class="IPBDescription">...can they be like brushes?</div> well.. not brushes actually.. i was really impressed with those sprites in the NS maps that are actually stuck there in its place! i'm a CS and DOD mapper, and when i place sprites in my maps, they all stand upright.. always.. weather your screen goes sideways or upside down, the sprites would still be aligned 'upright' at your screen, which really sux... it's like sprites could be only used for glowing lights... hmmm.. guys do you get what i'm saying?

well here's a clear NS example.. in some ready rooms, i think it's in ns_hena... the white fading lights at the end of the 'marine's tunnel'... whenever you turn to your sides, the white fading thingo follows you, it sorta gets misaligned... cuz they're sprites right?? but what's with the ring at the bottom of the structures ingame that indicate life? aren't they sprites too?? they are. then how'd flayra and the NS ppl get those sprites to be there stuck on the surface of the floor??

just a mapping question for NS (can actually be for other mods as well).. i'm very curious about it...
don't flame me <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo-->, and believe me, i'm not a n00b... been mappin' for quite some time now, since quake2 actually.. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

i'd appreciate the replies on this post. any will do.. thanks! i'l b checkin' on time to time <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='asrifle.gif'><!--endemo-->

    you can lock sprites along certain axes, but its a code thing, you sadly cant do it yourself in your maps...

    No, if I remember it is possible. I <i>think</i> what you are looking for is <a href='http://www.flashgott-maps.de/downloads/spritefixer.exe' target='_blank'>Sprite Fixer</a>. From what I remember, its in German, but it lets you lock the axes of sprites. This is different to the way Flayra is doing it AFAIK, but it should still work.

    Some of the fixed position 'sprites' in maps are actually 2D models or func_illusionaries. An example are the hologram signs in ns_bast. Those are all models.

    fam: what do you mean by Flayra making it as AFIAK? sorry.. but that's the one i don't get, i never came across that term before..

    yea i was browsing through all the sprites/models/textures in nstr and ns... i found that, yes, some of those which i thought were sprites locked were models.. but lets say i didn't want additional models for my map, cuz i think that they would only complicate some downloads (some newbie players who don't have any idea how to install a custom map)... isn't there anyway to lock the sprites in their axis without any external editor other than worldcraft? [thanks for all the responses guys!]

    He probably means AFAIK - As Far As I Know (I'm guessing a typo here).

    And no, it seems to be a limitation of the Half-Life engine that mappers cannot lock sprites on axes. And yes, it's irritated me no end in the past. Perhaps Flayra can code us a modification to the env_sprite that lets us *hint* *hint* <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->. You can always try the Valve ERC Anomalous Materials forums. They seem to come up with new ideas and techniques every day over there.

    You <b>can</b> lock sprites to axes! See my post.

    You can also lock sprites totally in place - facing a certain direction only, right side up, etc. Use the 'angles' command to give it the right set of pitch/yaw/roll settings.

    Actually, there are flags in the env_particle_custom entity that can be checked to lock sprites of a particle system to vertical or horizontal axes.
