300 ROCKS MY LOINS SO VERY VIOLENTLY

<div class="IPBDescription">THIS.. IS.. SPARTAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!112@1!2</div>Words alone cannot describe the sheer awesome this movie is. If you have not seen it, see it as soon as possible. There, is, no, excuse.

I strongly suggest every man wears a loose pair of slacks when he sees this. When you see a leg fly across the screen in slow motion, blood spurting everywhere, there needs to be room. There <i>needs</i> to be room.

My, oh.. oh my god. I don't think we stopped screaming "THIS, IS, SPARTAAAA!" until my buddy and I were home.

To those who say it was like troy: Dead wrong.
To those who said the slow motion was overdone: Dead wrong.
To those who said 300 ###### kicking spartans is awesome: Dead wrong, because you cannot <i>fathom</i> how incredibly amazing and arousing this movie is until you see it.

Please. Do yourself a favor. See the movie. See it. Dear lord, the ownage.

The ownage.

(I apologize for any lines crossed while typing this somewhat pointless thread. I'm still shivering, and quivering, and other vibrations ending in "ing" from the movie. My life will never be the same.)

Just to get a good barometer of your tastes, what other movies did you find were as good or better than 300? What are movies other people like that you don't, or that other people don't that you do?

    I'd go see it again, if I wasn't a poor bum T_T.

    I have a crappy memory and I really can't list them on command. Why don't you list movies and I'll say if I liked them if I've seen then? <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

edit: On second thought, just wait four more days. No one will shut up about it, so you'll hear everything and you can judge it yourself. xD

Yeah I just got back from a midnight showing of this. It did indeed rock really hard.

    Upsides:
-Good usage of slow-motion in fight scenes so you can actually<i> tell what is going on</i>. None of that shaky-cam BS that every other movie uses.
-Very artistic and stylish, good color selections and contrast in scenes. Just awesome.

    Downsides:
-Not a whole lot in the way of plot (What did you expect though?).

I wouldn't say it's the best movie I've ever seen, but it's definitely good. Good enough that if I had to pick a movie to go see right now. I'd go see it again instead of sampling something new.

It kind of reminds me of Gladiator but with fewer sad bits and more ###### kicking.

Oh, and all the cheesy'ish dialog lines you saw in the previews are the totality of cheesy'ish lines in the movie.

I just saw it. If you want to go for a laugh, it's alright, but it is pretty impossible to take seriously.

Somehow, I don't think that Greeks went to war in leather speedos.
Somehow, I don't think the Persians bred blade-armed cyberdemons to be executioners.

See, the part you're missing is that everything is meant to be AWESOME. Like... did you see the rhino? They should have had more rhinos.

This movie rocks so hard. Afterwards, you will want to kill something in melee combat.

Well the movie is based upon a graphic novel so I think the reason why they chose to use non human-like characters is to remind people of that.

Imho, this is THE best medieval war movie I've ever seen.. I highly recommend it to anyone that likes these types of movies.

The battle took place over 1000 years before the Medieval period..

So I don't really know what you would say about this movie.. since it was the uh.. Iron Age? I think.
Way better than any medieval movie anyways, especially when the action begins and they use those sweet shield tactics.

You must not know about the battle of thermopylae. The premise alone makes it worth seeing. Thermopylae is one of the most legendary battles in military history. It's basically YOUR fault you're not interested. I'd just go with Hellenistic Age or Antiquity or the Classical Era or something like that (I feel the Iron Age is just kind of pre-Greco-Roman). As for Greek armor during the period, I suggest Hanson's <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Western-Way-War-Infantry-Classical/dp/0520219112/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5/103-8917622-0810214?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173548676&sr=8-5" target="_blank">The Western Way of War</a> (particularily chapter 6). Generally you have a heavy reliance on greaves and shields more than breastplates and helmets (and the perplexing abundance of long hair as a sign of militarism). Then again, I haven't seen the movie yet, so I'm not sure what kind of historical problems the depiction of Spartans might have (but that shouldn't let you be distracted by the potential awesomeness of the movie).

The terms the "old Greeks" and "old Romans" do exists for a reason.

The setting this film takes place is neither the iron, nor the bronze age but the ancient world (often called "Classical Antiquity").

But well, iron age and antiquity do overlap and depending on who you ask, the answers may differ alot..

Yea I realize it's not actually medieval.. I was basically lumping all the war movies where they use swords and shields into one category because if I said it was the best pre-greco-roman-iron-age-y2kbug era movie I have ever seen then that would mean it's better than like one movie I've seen from that genre <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

Actually, it was pretty johnny-on-the-spot with the history we know. Over the top, of course, but the basic ideas were all there. Even "Come back with your shield, or on it." If you missed the intent, Spartans used the shield of a fallen warrior as a stretcher to carry his body home. Also, if you're going to run from battle, the first thing you would drop would be your shield. Coming home with no shield means you're a coward.

I absolutely love these kinds of movies. Gets the blood flowing. Don't even get me started on how incredibly awesome those helmets are.
  • ThansalThansal The New Scum Join Date: 2002-08-22 Member: 1215Members, Constellation
The movie is pure and unadulterated ###### kicking, nothing more.

There is no plot to speak of, just killing, and making it look AWESOME! (and my awesome I mean totally sweet).

If you are a history nut, it you will have problems with it (there are alot of them). However if you go in wanting nothing more then blood, blood, blood, and MORE blood (with an equal amount of beefcake, and a smattering of harem) then you will come out happy.

One of the scenes that history geeks would REALLY enjoy is the first actual conflict between the 300 and Xerxes Persians shows how the Spartans ACTUALLY fought, aka they actually do use a phalanx, and it is amazing to watch.

Just saw it last night, loved it for the most part.

A lot of the dialogue was awful, but the battle scenes were the coolest ish I've seen on film since Sin City. Although it apparently annoyed some people, I really liked how the slow-mo made each movement look like an individual comic book cell.

Oh, and Xerxes was creepy as hell.
