It's my High Poly Infantry Portal, all packed up and ready to go. This very fine model is 1021 polys, over the original 237. The new UVW map is 2x512, vs 1x256 of the original. However, I suck at skinning, so I did my best in applying the original skin to the model. It's not a full release, however, because I'm hoping that one day, someone will skin this. In the meantime, though, it's ready to use, and prettier than the original.

There are four screens there. Two from the original IP, and two from mine. Lots of the model is smaller details, so I felt the comparison was necessary.

That is the compiled model, and the UVW maps. I wish anyone that tries the best of luck in skinning it.

    Looks fine for me, really nice job fitting the UV's to the old skin.

    Yeah it really needs a good skin to do justice to the extra details you've worked in.

    Why? The whole point is to have it look like the original but higher detail, it has the exact same skin just with more geometric detail - why does it need a new skin (which lets face it, will probably be bad compared to the originals) ?

    No, he's right, SpaceJesus. And so are you. I think you're just talking about the same thing in different ways. We need a new skin, a higher detail skin. I'd like it best if it looked exactly like the original, but higher res, but I'll take anything that looks good.

    it needs a new skin because the old one is low res and could be higher detail, but the problem is there is no one on these forums that could make one as good as the original.

    could you post the skinmesh please? preferably the current skin and a wireframe. I'll have a poke around with Photoshop and see if i can't get the skin looking a bit prettier <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

    The bare UVW maps are included in the download, like it says right beneath the download link, and the current skin is, of course, attached to the model. Since it's so easy to pull it off via Jed's HLMV, I didn't see a good reason to package it separately.

    I'm working on a 1024x1024 skin. I have no idea how to slap it on the model, so, yeah... MSN me at swiftgeneration at hotmail.com or PM me in the IRC channel (I'm Swift, of course) if you can help and are interested.

    So far I have the first hseet done, and starting on the other.

    Keep in mind that the HL engine can't accept anything over a 512x512 skin, so you're going to have to resize it before you put it on the model. And to do that, you'll need to save the skin as an 8-bit (256 color) bmp, open the model in <a href="http://www.wunderboy.org/apps/jhlmv.php" target="_blank">Jed's HLMV</a>, hit the Textures tab, and then the button named "Import Texture".

    I like it Swift, the black/yellow stripes look very fine though, maybe use larger segments for it?

    yeah the chevrons are a bit too small at the moment, but otherwise that's really good, I love it.
