Smoking Aces

total disappointment
It is not the gritty action packed movie they sell it to be. It's slow to start, quick to climax and then drags its feet on it's way to the finish line. I was expecting a much more in-depth intertwining of the fates of each other characters (assassins and police alike). Instead the characters are just dropped off in a linear fashion without any distinct merrit other than the audience thinking "one down." (there's hardly any inter-assassin fighting) It also had this unexpected "plot twist" that was like some b-grade murder mystery which somehow ended up being central to the plot and the premise for the entire movie. It just so happened that it was also a totally useless plot accessory to what would've been a good action movie.
They tried too hard to make it like an oceans 11 where everything falls into place at the end. There wasn't enough peices to begin with and it was too easy to figure out where the "twist" was leading.

While I agree that the movie had a really... unnecessarily forced ending, which the movie would have been much improved to do without, but fortunately the rest of the movie was quite nice. Large explosions, guns and what have you.
What more did you want?
Mindless entertainment.

Right on. That is what I was expecting and wanted also.
T'was a bit slow at the beggining and end, but there was a good amount of crazy scenes, gunfights, etc..
Just what my depraved soul needed.
They could have spent more time on the assasins, many of them were very interesting. Needed more Tremors to be honest \o.
Luckily, I didn't, and so the movie was awesome. You could see the plot twist coming from a mile away, but who cares?
And besides... that 50 caliber rifle is like the hand of god himself...
What I liked:
-I LOVE Ray Liotta, and he was as good here as in any other film.
-I like Ryan Reynolds (in more ways than one omg <_< >_>), and he wasn't bad here. Better in the beginning, I really can't take him seriously.
I really like Common, but his character seemed stereotypical and forced. The "honorable soul brotha" type bs.
-Tommy Flanagan (the guy with the scar, Sin City, Gladiator, Braveheart) is really not casted in enough movies. He's simply a good actor.
What stunk:
-Alicia Keys was gorgeous, but her character was empty and contributed nothing.
-The other black chick was pointless at best, and unfunny, predictable, and annoying at worst. Okay, she's a lesbian.. what, that's funny? Sadly not.
-Ben Affleck contributed nothing, and his dialogue was utterly boring.
-Jeremy Piven was annoying as always.
-Andy Garcia is a mafia movie staple, and yet, his character seemed forced and this is likely due to the flaccid plot twist that he had to embrace.
-The rest of the assassins were relentlessly boring and accomplished nothing. The point of the movie was supposed to be intertwining plots and raging twists, and what eventually happened was just a series of misunderstandings that resulted in gunfights. Unentertaining and pointless.
I'm not sure if I've missed anything that I DID like, but there's definitely more to list under what I didn't like. It was all simply so forgettable, and I honestly don't wish to recall much more.
tl;dr?

important edit: If any of you were even CLOSE to enjoying this movie, I would hope that you've seen both Snatch and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. If you haven't, you should be aware that they're both madly entertaining and available in torrent form from mininova probably faster than overnight.

Exactly, especially the last point. What I was trying to say is that I wanted MORE mindless violence and less of the crappy "drama." There just wasn't enough character depth for the death of a character to mean something (except ray liotta). There wasn't enough calculated killings like Tommy Flanagan's character, it was all just too up in the air, random clashes of people with guns. The guy with the spike up his sleeve died way too quick and he was just plain awesome.
P.S
I wouldn't advertise torrent downloads - though I think they are hard movies to find otherwise (I've never seen snatch in any shops including CD warehouse which normally has everything)
i got that.
and i laughed most of the way through that film.
because it was kinda hilarious..
in a grotesque way.
