Classes?

I haven't been here long enough to really go through all the topics, so I don't know if it's been discussed, but what does everyone think about marine classes?

I think it would be pretty neat if there could be a good combination of commander droppable weapons/items and selectable classes. An engineer-ish class could be the only marine type who could have a welder and only get a pistol, where an assult class might have an mg, etc. Then there are also the other upgrades that commander can drop like jetpacks and heavies.

This could be really interesting if the maps are bigger for things like snipers. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />

its not bad having pseudo-classes based on what equipment the commander drops for someone. ie if he drops a welder you should be using that, if you have a gl you should be killing buildings or laying suppression fire, if you have a hmg you should be covering, if you have nothing you should be building.

A serverside option would be great
e.g. classic marine team or marine classes

Here's my idea for classes. Team upgrades like damage / armor levels and motion tracking would apply to all. The classes could be researched or unlocked over time.

Normal Soldier: Default class. Shotgun or LMG. Low armor, low damage. Can upgrade at a spawn point once something else is researched.
Demolitions - would have grenades (extra if grenades is researched), a grenade launcher, and mines (extra if researched). Medium armor.
Front line Soldier: Heavy Armor, HMG/Shotgun.
Scout: Jet pack, any weapon. High damage, low armor.
Engineer: Low damage and armor. Any weapon, can receive a jet pack, but not heavy armor. Has mines, a welder, and builds faster than other classes.
Hybrid soldier: Medium armor and attack power. Has mines or grenades, and can receive either Heavy armor or a Jet pack.

Marines could change classes at any time after death, or if they wanted to change into another class while alive, it would be with the commander's approval and at the cost of resources.

    This doesn't seem right...

There should be no classes for other's than the aliens in NS2...

Why? Because it sounds really silly and would make the game more advanced that it needs to be... Also, This sounds really simular to Half-Life Team fortress...

I think it would add a little bit more to the game. It would also allow players to have more of a customized feel to their play style.

That doesn't make sense. The commander would have to hand out the kits, so depending on how he commands, you may get your favorite class or a class you suck with. We should just stick with the current system, much more customizable than having to chose between classes. If I wanted classes, I'd play aliens or BF2142.

Well, I think that it would work with or without classes. After all, NS2 will be different...either way, I was just coming up with ideas for the classes instead of snipers, etc.
