Being on IRC allows you to quickly talk with other people, and there's plenty of random chat that happens there that could prove valuable to finding the werewolves. It's typically considered a requirement for the game.

You need an IRC client to use gamesurge. mIRC and HydraIRC are a few suggestions.
+Xchat <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
I'm currently using irssi actually, but I would never recommend it to someone just starting to use IRC.

Just for posterity, the game thread is here.
I know people (including me) were unsure about this, and I don't think there's an answer anywhere yet, so here should be a good place to ask it. The active observers don't get to have private communication about the game with anybody, right? I guess they would be able to have private discussions amongst each other. Basically, we need a clear statement of what the rules are for that, rather than assuming they are more or less strict than they actually are.

Players are allowed:
-To talk about the game in IRC -To post on the thread -To talk between each other
Active observers are allowed:
-To talk about the game in IRC -To post on the thread
Normal observers are allowed:
-To... talk about unrelated stuff in IRC?
So no, the Active Observers can't communicate directly with players.
Comments
Forum for making votes, public statements, etc.
IRC for general chat and private messaging.
So we have to be on the IRC and in the game thread or can we just use one or the other?
