Windows Installer Service could not be accessed...

I am freakin' out of ideas. I'm getting the following error:

QUOTE

The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.

I've done pretty much everything I can find online. I've checked the registry entries, unregistered and reregistered the service, I tried verifying the files, I've tried using the Windows Installer 3.2 thing, I've done a system restore (but since I don't know when the problem started, I don't know how far to go back).

I seriously have no idea what to do. I don't want to do a repair installation, but I'm at wit's end. I would really like to install my printer software.

Suggestions?

Try Run > "services.msc" and looking for the "Windows Installer" entry. Mine is set to manual, calls msiexec.exe with the /V switch as LocalSystem, and works just fine. Windows Installer depends on the Remote Procedure Call service, so make sure RPC is in working order too.

I tried starting it and everything, and it didn't work. I also checked the Remote Procedure Call service. No dice.

If no body has any other ideas, does anyone know of a good tech-support forum?

I may also just try doing everything in the guides, and restarting in safe mode between each step.

Microsoft has a number of resolution methods for this error and it looks like you've tried a number of them.

Take a close look through this page and this other page to make sure you've tried them all.

Other than that, I've always received excellent information from the PC Mechanic web forums. Be sure to give solid details of everything you've done up to this point.
