Running DS Homebrew

<div class="IPBDescription">Is it easy?</div>I've never been one to mod/homebrew consoles, but trying so for the DS sounds a tad fun. Primarily to haul around a couple .mp3s to listen to rather than getting a iPod or something, because I am ultimately cheap and audio quality isn't of much importance.

Does anyone run DS homebrew here? Is it easy? What do I need to know/buy to get started?

I bought myself a supercard and a superkey and stuck in a 1 gig SD card from my camera.

It was the best thing I ever did for my DS.

    I've got Nethack, Monkey Island 1, 2 and 3, a linux distro, a wifi sniffer plus a few MP3s. It's awesome.

    Check out <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_homebrew" target="_blank">this wikipedia page</a> for a few links.

How much did that SuperCard and SuperKey go for? My friend suggested an M3 Lite, and I was thinking of getting a 2GB Card; since the only SD card I have is 128 MB, and that's from my camera.

NitroTracker seems pretty nifty, are there any arrangement programs that use a staff and will playback?

I'm using an M3 Simply.. a slot 1 device. $45 from Divineo. Have to supply your own MicroSD card, but that's not really a problem, and that's all you need to get going.
Also lets me boot the Supercard Lite (Slot 2 device) that I picked up for about $80 back before slot 1 devices were available, also using a MicroSD.

So a pair of 2GB micro-sd cards gives me a good four gigs for homebrew and... other things.

Do they have a custom OS running yet on the DS, like they have for PSP? All I know is that PSP downgrading is risky and I haven't got a DS (yet) so... Meh is Nintendo also willing to kill the homebrewers like Sony is willing to?

    I have more questions then the OP <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />

I believe Linux is being developed for DS. Homebrewing doesn't alter the DS at all, unlike PSP, so it's fine. You keep your warranty!

DSLinux has been around for a number of months now. There's even a version of nano-X that runs a GUI on it, so you can play junk like a Linux port of Tetris. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> Virtual keyboard on the touchscreen, mouse switchability and some run webservers off their DS at this point. I personally used it to control the NOC at a trade show in January. We got some major brownie points from the Opera and Nintendo people for that. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

You *can* flash your DS so you can run anything you want without needing a passkey device, but it's risky, and many 'bricked' DSes have been returned after failed attempts. You literally have to blindly short a connector that's about 5mm from a case screw, which will brick the DS if you touch the two together. Oh, and you have to hold it in place during the entirety of the firmware flash.

Needless to say, most people just go with a passkey. No need for any of that crap, plugs in just like a standard DS cartridge. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
