Gapminder
Video

This is an amazing demonstration of how data can come alive with some smart visualization to really give you a solid mental model for the subject matter. The software he's using is hosted by Google, called Gapminder. Gapminder is also the name of the non-profit that is creating these visualization tools built on top of the demographic data that the UN collects.

His talk was interesting, and the statistics programme thingeh "Gapminder" was also very shiny.

    I approve of this message.

If our species as a whole wishes to have a chance as a unified race in the future, we need to listen to people like this.

    Who'd have thought?
Though I was surprised at how strong his accent was(me being Swedish as well), it only made everything more clear.

I agree; it's time to elect a president with a funny accent. Heck, at least get a few into Congress. Texan doesn't count.

There are few people in the world with the ability to make boring subject matter that interesting. I had a few lecturers at uni, very few, that were as good as that guy.

That was fascinating! I'm totally into effective presentation of graphs, and I found everything he talked about very engrossing. I would love to see more databases in the world, information information information!

Valve Software have started it themselves, as in Episode One they included some code which keeps track of player behaviours in their single player game such as times completed, saves, time taken, most deaths per chapter, etc. I love the idea of seeing patterns emerging within the world and perhaps one day some global formula could be derived, ala the movie Pi.

Well, maybe that's getting a bit fanciful.

Anyway, I admire this mans intent (and that of everyone involved), and it's really great to see the power of symbology being used in a worthwhile manner.

Just a side note here, I showed this video to a really cute girl I know who's also something of an intellectual. She loved it. Will that get me anywhere? Probably not. ;p

If you really want to know if she's interested, you're going to have to show her something else.
