what the firm described as its "highly sophisticated purification process", based on Nasa spacecraft technology, was in fact reverse osmosis used in many modest domestic water purification units.

Yesterday, just when executives in charge of a £7m marketing push for the product must have felt it could get no worse, it did precisely that.

The entire UK supply of Dasani was pulled off the shelves because it has been contaminated with bromate, a cancer-causing chemical.

What can one say to that? Take tap water add cancer and put a big price on it, I don't see how you could make a worse product.

I always thought the water you bought in the states, branded by groceries, such as "drinking water" "sparkling water" and such, were in fact just that... Tap water with reverse osmosis

edit: what do they mean, they "make water from spacecraft technology"

That's like saying you make spaghetti with power turbines or something. Or am I missing something?

Heheh I've known that for a while (not the cancer part), it says right on the side that their purification process is "reverse osmosis", and on a whim one day I actually looked it up. Made me laugh for a pretty long time.

Makes me wonder how healthy their other drinks are, seeing how Dasani would logically be the one with the most strict purification requirements.

I knew about that tap water part before it was even released in Britain. Everyone said it was really great and I should try it one day. So I bought a bottle and it tastes exactly like tap water. I'm glad it was taken off the shelfs, apart from it being cancerous it's a rip-off.

According to Fox news the bromate levels were "Borderline" at 10 to 22 ppb (parts per billion). European limits are 25 ppb.

It is likely that there is little increase in cancer risk if you don't drink the bottled water regularly. This may well apply to other bottled water that uses ozone to steralize the water, as the ozone can evidently react with the bromide ions oxidising them to bromate. (Note; the above is speculation. I make no claims for the validity of the above)

I must say that one bit made me think 'Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?'

I don't know what they are going on about there. Unless they mean that Calcuim Chloride is a very similar substance to Calcium Bromide, I really don't know what they are getting at.

NASA has been at the forfront of all sorts of technology for years. They invented the HACCP (prononced Ha-sip) system. It stands for "Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points". Basically, it's a way to keep foods from becoming comtaminated/germ-infested while being prepared. Naturally, this was developed to keep astronauts from eating contminated food while in space. The kitchen I work at uses it, as does virtually any kitchen in the US. We are, in essence, using 'Space-age technology.' That is what Dasani means when they say their water is purified with spacecraft tech.

    Mmmm, free cancer...

Anyway, whats the big deal with bottled water anyway? I mean, its water. And its in a bottle. And it costs $1, even though there is a drinking fountain withing 5 feet.

Plus, when they purify it, they remove all the minerals, a good deal of which are beneficial.

"A fool and his money are easily seperated." More power to the Coca-Cola company; cultivating and refining stupidity into money has got to be capitalism's greatest achievement. God knows we've got enough stupidity for it to work.

I hate to burst your bubble everybody but EVERYTHING gives you cancer these days! Hell even air gives you cancer. The thing I find funny about this is why people didn't even see it comming. Even the description on the bottle basically describes it as being normal water which has been filtered.

Amen Dub. Heres a few facts for you:

Growing up in a city and moving to a rural area accentuate your death age by 5 years.

Natural Air in any place but rural areas causes Lung Cancer.

Being within 40 feet of someone smoking will effect your lungs just as bad as smoking, if not worse.

There is 4-10 traces of cyanide for every hamburger. There are 15-20 traces for every steak.

There are a lot more. Just look on any environmental health site.

Exactly, we are the beginning of the end for the human race. We consistently ignore the harfull effects of the things we put in our bodies because untill we get ill it's not our problem but by then it's too late. We are infecting the gene pool to with our pollution and it will probably be our undoing.

With all the carcinigenic stuf fin our foods today, they should stop pretending and just release a food that is ALL preservative. It would have a shelf life greater than a tootsie roll and cause ulcers the second it was swallowed, but it would be quicker than eating all that stuff over time anyways.

    Yes I can see it now: "Preservi-Os, they're cancer-iffic!"
