A Way To Block In-game Chat?

Spaceman_SpiffSpaceman_Spiff Join Date: 2004-03-02 Member: 27061Members
Hey Guys,

I was wondering if there was anyway to turn off the in-game text messages - both "team messages" and messages that everyone can read during NS play.

I have younger siblings who tend to wander in and out of the room during sessions, and I'd like a way to cover up some of the more colorful sayings that NS players are prone to type in during the heat of battle.

Thanks!

Spiff

    besides a piece of the tape on the bottom part of the montior i dont think you can do that since the hud_draw isnt working in 3.0

    hud_saytext I beleve, and hud_saytext_time is another one to play with.
    If those arn't right it's close at least, just have steam autofill it in.

    A high resolution works better imo, as you can still see the text without typing commands. The text goes smaller, but stays where you can see it. Typing works alot better than voice when you have specific things you need to say. If you have the time to type that is.

    Setting your monitor to a higer resolition would only make the text appear smaller; it would still be legible.

    Some servers operate swear filters, but they tend not to advertise this on their server name. IMO the best solution would just be just to discourage younger siblings from comming into the room, or at least from looking over your shoulder.

    OT:
    Geronimo, why should text be better than voice "when you have specific things you need to say"? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo--> Why would you use the voice comm when you dont have specific things to say? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Yes you can look around for the commands, you can turn off everything from all text messages, to deaths and crosshairs.

    Thanks for those tips guys, I do appreciate them. I've figured that there'll be plenty of time later for my younger brothers (and sisters) to learn the fine art of trash talking, but for now, i'd like to keep it as seperate as possible.

    I'm going to look into those Half-Life commands. In the meantime, perhaps you guys know of any "PG" Natural Selection servers where foul language is not usually the norm/or permitted?

    Our (THV's) Ns2 clan server operates a swear filter, but we will porbably shut it down as everyone plays ns3.
    All those metamods...

    Our NS3 server has no swear filter, but our admins are strict on the use of foul language; one warning, then ban.

    Let's just say that if it's beeped out on Jerry Springer, you'll get a warning and consecutive ban upon repeat for it on the server.

    Try the tactical gamer server as well, US based, promoting mature and respective pc gaming, for a multitude of games (<a href='http://www.tacticalgamer.com' target='_blank'>website</a>)

    Thanks again guys,

    I'm going to visit your servers.

    This forum has proved extremely helpful - the NS community is a great group.

    Best,

    I have been playing mostly commander since 1.0, I found that its better to type more specific orders. Ie "Phase to hiveX, build the TF and PlayerY and X stay to watch, while the rest move on". If you said this on voicecomm, everyone would hear it, but they wouldnt react as well. At least not in my experience.

    lol I C.

    It's just that "Typing works alot better than voice when you have specific things you need to say" suggests that you should only use voice comm for random jitterings.

    Well, most ppl do anyway... <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I see i am not the only one here with the text over crosshair problem.

    I can not run in a higher mode (in 680 atm) due to system limitations.

    I do not want to turn text off but i'd love to be able to set a maximum hight text can reach - In CS it gets a 1/3 up the page and then fades in NS it goes all the way up.

    You mean 640*480? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I would just turn the text off. We are talking about "cl_autohelp"? Well, once you've seen it once you don't need to see it again... :S

    I am pretty sure there is no cvar to limit text size. Besides, you are probably hindered more by the low resolution than the text boxes.

    Sorry I am not really answering your question, but IMO turning it off and saving up for a better PC is far simpler.
