How To Improve My Comm Skills

<div class="IPBDescription">What to do to ...</div> Hi ther

i have been playing comm for some time now, won some matches lost even more... So i'm looking for some way to improve my tactics (map doesn't matter here as i know mostly all strat points on most maps)

Well my problem is the "mid"-phase of every game. I get around 3-6 RTs up really soon and try to elec them if possible - now i loose when having bad luck some while they are not finished elect and i have to rebuild them -> dammit.

After being able to lock at least one hive i start with AU1 - WU1 - WU2 - WU3 - AU2 but while getting those Upgrades my RTs are falling to some Fades or Onos.

During WU2 i'm upgrading the Armory and around AU2 im starting to build the protolab.

Around this time i loose the locked hive.

So what should i change about my tactics - upgrading the armory earlier / try to <!--emo&::siege::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/siege.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='siege.gif' /><!--endemo--> another hive after locking the first hive? Keep my <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> near the RTs while e-up runs?

Looking for some advise <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Try rushing the first armor upgrade, not electrifying your resource nozzles (instead, send marines to patrol back and forth), and pushing on their first hive as soon as possible (hand out a few shotguns to marines that know how to aim).

Electrifying your resource nozzles and attempting to lock down hives at the beginning will most likely (if the alien team has any idea about what they are doing) result in everything going down to fades/onos, which come quicker since you do not get upgrades early enough, causing your marines to die much easier in battle.

So get upgrades/tech first and then secure hives/get your fancy electrification, not the other way around. Just make sure you don't neglect Kharaa development - keep sending marines in groups to take out nodes/abort gestations/etc.

Jeep pressure on the Aliesns. I think thats my error too - I sit back happy to keep the 5 nodes, 1 hive we've got and the aliens lame up their part of the map then nons charge, cos I;ve given them the time. When Onii appear, hand out HMGs to you marines if you want to kill it. Also, dont assume that you have to reasch the top tech level to win. Shotgun rushes or effective siegeing have won just as many games as HA trains, and JP/SG rushes do truly own.

Don't waste that res on locking down the hives, pressure the alien hive with a shotgun attack, even if you think it won't win, while you send some guys to pressure, send some others to take down their RTs, if shotgunners go to the hive, thats a higher priority than defending nodes, so they will most likely defend the hive or lose it.

Hive lockdowns are useless, and so is elec, if you keep your marines in the field and keep them pressuring, then there is no reason to elec.

The SINGLE best way to improve your comming, besides med skills, is to make demos of your games and watch them. After a while, you'll gain an understanding of what works in a given situation and what doesn't. Marine pressure is one element that is fairly constant among all situations, but against certain alien strats there are some means of providing pressure that are more effective than others. What I'm trying to say is having a rigid comm order is ok to start out with, but to be truly effective as commander I believe your plans must be adaptable on some level to the alien game plan.

Electricity I find to be a VERY specialized upgrade, and is only useful in very few circumstances granted you are playing a competant alien team. The most common situation I find myself electriifying in is against sensory when my pressure team survives and is able to cap good alien nodes. However, I think electricity verses DCs is just plain stupid ...

Allright, keeping them under pressure works quite well (even though my team wasn't able to kill ^*&# :-)) Thanks for your tips and meet you around

This is how I don't loose the locked hive:
The first thing i build in the base after ip's and armory is obs. Then I directly get phase tech. By now I usualy have a hive so I send 1 marine there to build the phase gate.

I usualy dont spend res electrifying my rts, I just tell my marines which is under attack ("**** rt under attack" if i have any good players on my team, someone will go there =)

I've commed many games (since 1.00) and my favourite strategy is to get a couple of nodes, a hive and all the arms lab upgrades as soon as possible. Lvl3 marines quite early in the games are very, very lethal. Even if the alien team is experienced they will have a tough time.

Saying that, I've lost as many games as I have won ^^

The most annoying thing I find is that there isn't any good non-rine base defense

In the beginning, I find it the best to drop one infantry portal, an armory, and then one pack of mines. Then send the entire team to a hive, and along the way build all the resource towers. Once you get the hive, get phase technology; build the phase gate beside the hive resource tower and electrify the resource tower. This way you have a two in one combo that should last for a bit.

At this time, start getting upgrades and send marines to protect resource towers. Also, I can't stress this enough, hotkey your observatory. This allows for quick scanning to see what the enemy is doing; you got 100 energy, why waste it right?

Also, a really good way to get attention of marines to say their names instead of just "you". And always say "good work" or "good shot" or something encouraging after your marines accomplish a goal.

And if all goes wrong, start speaking another language for no reason to make yourself sound cool. I do it all the time.
