Sudden Fps Drops

Hey guys, I have a problem not only in HL but also BF1942 where I'll have perfectly stable fps (generally around 70) then all of a sudden this drops to 10-30fps for about 3-4 minutes and then goes back up to normal... I tried figuring out if something was running in the background but I'm not noticing any unusual activity.

Here's my system:

(laptop)
P4 3.06Ghz
1024 MB RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000
WindowsXP

also, this problem only seems to occur when I play online... so I'm thinking something might be eating my bandwidth or my isp is weird...

I would have a guess it might be the CPU going to hot and dropping to half the frequency or something instead of shuting down. Online games often have more players and stuff happening then their single player mode which would use more CPU power. Half-life in particular is CPU bound on almost any setup, which means you will probably be seing constant 100% CPU usage in half-life MOD's.

Check the temps during play by playing a game of NS and alt-TAB or windows key out and check the temps after a round(most motherboards support this feature so that programs can get a reading).

    Who is your laptop manufacturer?

I know alienwares have a problem with slowing down real bad - my roommate had that problem, and it got worse and worse until his machine was almost useless.

If you can I'd recommend complaining to your manufacturer, if you are still under warrenty, you might be able to get them to give you a different (usually better) model.

Just don't get discouraged when they jerk you around for months at a time...

ok I think I've narrowed it down. It seems that every 5mn my upload rate goes nuts... Here's a little graph.

    Any ideas?

oh and ignore the very last 4 "squares" in the upload graph (the map was changing)

My first guess would be that you have a virus, and someone is using your computer to either scan for weaknesses, or conduct denial of service attacks.

If you keep your virus checker up-to-date, and run it often, obviously I am mistaken.

If you don't keep it updated, update it and run it.

If you don't have one, there are several free ones, you my try googling free antivirus - I can't really say which is best, and which is bad, but its much better than nothing.

Umm I pretty sure I dont have a virus since I update my definitions and all that stuff regularly but I'll do a scan just to be sure <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Take a screenshot of your running processes in Task Manager while this problem is occuring. I had a computer which would do the same thing, and there was a Trojan running which was undetectable by any virus/trojan scanners.

Don't forget to also try running adaware and spybot. Sometimes it may not be a virus that's causing the problem, but something almost as bad. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

On SOME servers on SOME maps.

    ping can be server-related.

some maps have flaws in them - which make them laggy.

check that out, give me more info, WHAT servers, WHAT maps? <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
