<div class="IPBDescription">From playing NS. :(</div> Hi guys,
Since getting my shiny new ATi 9600XT, every HL game has shown a 15ish FPS drop. Not too bad you say, I was on 60-70ish anyway before Steam came along.
However.
In NS, I was already looking at 30-40 fps anyway. When I was playing the other night, that brought me with the other gubbins NS brings down to less than TEN fps in the MS. In other words, absolutely unplayable.
Pre Steam -> 100fps
NS Pre Steam -> 60fps
Steam -> 60fps
NS Steam -> 45fps
Steam update recently -> 45
NS apres-Steam update -> 30 fps
New Graphics card -> 15 fps for NS.
Thanks a lot VALVe. I would blame the ATi card or my relatively low spec system (and I'm sure that's what VALVe will do on their forums too) but seeing as I can run Deus Ex 2 at 50 fps even on my old crappy Duron 1.3Ghz 512 SDRAM, personally I think that answer is full of the donkey poop.
Very annoyed, very gutted.
Praying someone else has an answer though...

Pre-Steam, my fps was 100. Now its 60 WITH steam -_-
Some people swear by the 3.5 and 3.7 cats, you might try them.
nV allways had better openGL drivers, in a game as old and CPU intensive as this(mostly quake 1 with some quake 2 and some VALVe changes to the engine) driver CPU usage overhead might make a difference.

I have 256 9800 XT Pro
Are they supposed to be set to 0 or 1? (which is visually more appealing?)
Are 3.5 & 3.7 cat drivers better than the 4.3?
And if Nvidia has better opengl drivers should you use d3d on ati cards, or still opengl?
Thx, I really want to get the most power out of my card, I payed a fortune for it!!
Ta Soylent,
Never had an ATi card before in 14 years of owning PC's, so this is a learning curve. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo--> I'll give it a go and shout back on here later.
If you're getting a significant drop in fps on all HL mods, or even specifically NS, try playing with your openGL settings. In gaming, you want performance, not quality. However, if you're getting 100 fps, with no video card lagginess, you might want to consider using those nice visual bells/whistles that come with your card.
Experiment with this, because it IS worth it in the long run.

(truform is no longer implemented in hardware to save transistors(allmost no developers used it), it's done by the drivers on r3x0 architecture radeons, this means that having truform enabled will eat alot of CPU power which is not what you wan't to do in a game that is allready CPU limited)<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'm going to try this out when I get back home in a few hours to see if it works to up my fps at all. I'd like to get higher fps than I do now.
Radeon 9600 is a good card, you just need to change the settings <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
ps: anyone who doesn't know how to change video card settings, it's really simple.
Right click on your desktop, go to properties(a new window pops up: Display Properties), go to settings, click on advanced (new window pops up bearing the title of your video card), and then have some fun. You can play with all of your color settings through here, as well as openGL, direct3d, etc. If you play online games at least 4 times a week, you NEED to know how to adjust your video card so you can fix problems when they crop up.
Note for those wondering, please remember that I say everything else runs fine, this has been entirely HL specific. I can happily run UT2k3 or UT2k4 Demo at 1024 with a perfectly fine framerate. It's just HL which appears to have dipped, with NS in particular.
then send me your card and I'll give u mine <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
ok seriously now... have you tried newer or older drivers?
Getting irritated now. Any more ideas before I pop?
