You must also have steam installed. The 600k version is fine; you do not need 500megs of CS Cache rubbish.
<a href='http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=getsteamnow' target='_blank'>http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=getsteamnow</a>
Once you have installed steam, try to run "Half-life" from the "My Games" list. It will then prompt you to convert your HL files from your WON based version to STeam cache files. Do so.
Now install NS 3 beta 1, 2 and then 3. Installing Xfire is optional.
Ns should now work. If you do not see many servers, press "change filters" and clear any values/boxes there.

i've had Steam for a long time.. and infact played NS 2.0 over Steam 2-3 times and then stopped.
so i don't need to download Steam again.. i think.
this NS stuff is so confusing with so friggin many versions out there..
why doesn't the NS release 1 version and make it a required to update the game?
seriously.. as a person who doesn't alot of time to figure out which version works.. its a huge waste of my free time seeing as its already precious enough.
i still don't have a clue which version i need.. and well if i need a rocket scientist to help me out, i'd rather spend my time playing something else..
sorry if i offended anyone here.. just that as a new player its very confusing.. and on top of it, if theres errors.. it causes 10x the confusion..

That pretty much says it all. If you're on version 2, I think you'll want to do exactly what this says: get NS beta 1, 2 and 3 and install in that order.

hmm.. i need to delete NS altogether and start over at this point me thinks..
Dont forget NS3.0 beta 1 is not an update to NS2.0... It is a standalone mod... If you still have NS2.0 installed in Steam; You should see 2 Natural selection mods in third party games section of steam...
This release is Beta as you can notice... So dont expect an auto-update by steam... I hope NS3 final release will come as an official Steam mod; so auto-update would become available...
EDIT: I just noticed you didnt installed steam to default directory( c:\program files\steam)... so after installing beta1 check for the nsp folder in c:\steam\steamapps\my-email\half-life\... if it is not there probably it is installed in c:\program files\steam\steamapps\my-email\half-life\nsp... move nsp folder to c:\steam\steamapps\my-email\half-life\

thanks so much!!!
the installation was not even asking me where to install.. it just kept doing the install.. and obviously it was in the wrong folder.
anyway after installation i copied the NSP folder to the correct folder and viola <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
aight.. now that im this far.. is there something else that needs to be done?
NS has a (beta) beside it right now.. and i will assume thats a bad thing.. til someone corrects me.
next i download one of those patches?
And nope (Beta) is not bad thing... Man, the waiting period for NS3.0 was really a pain for me and most of us who had no opportunity for early playtests... So Im glad it is out even if it is in beta state...
Have Fun...

Personally I would recommend totally removing your NS 2 (steam) installation before continuing. It is obsolete, and so should not be needed in future.
Gaz_oZz is correct about your directory, (C:\steam\steamapps\your-email\half-life) but I fear that beta 3 is still finding the old path (C:\Program Files\steam\steamapps\your-email\half-life) from the registry. I do not have steam installed on this PC, so cannot tell you whereabouts the string will be, but I will have a look tonight.
If you have the time, or do not want to wait for me, you can delete the NS installation (*THROUGH STEAM*) yourself, and start over. If you are confident with using windows registry, do a search for "Steam", or look in:
HKLM\Software\Valve\Steam. - My guess as to where it would be.
Correct any references to the NS installation path. Heck, it may not even be stored in the registry, but your symptoms suggest it is.
And TY AlienBait for supporting my earlier post. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

okay.. so some how i managed to get it working but now.. every time i choose a server whether its ver. 2 or 3 i get the "hosts client.dll file differs from yours" crap..
i hope the NS team has read this thread so they can see how frustrating it is with many versions.. and also dealing with Steam..
i have ver. 3 beta3 installed now.. and it still looks hopeless.
I think the NS team should be COMMENDED on the amount of bugs they managed to FIX! No offence, but your case is one of few; most people had no problems working out how to install it.
As for Steam, well. The words I would use to describe it are somewhat... vivid, and would be *'d anyway.
Are you running C-D by chance? This has known issues with NS which is causing the client dll missmatch with some people. Turn it off and NS should work again.

nope
i do not have any anti cheat program running..
hmm.. is there like 1 file i can download that allows me to update to the current version instead of 2-3 files..
bah im afraid im gonna ruin my perfectly working Steam (yes its working fine as of right now) and i know how hard it was to get it to work properly.
Then to be sure; check c:\steam\steamapps\mail\half-life\nsp folder for a file called xfire_installer.exe it is the installer of an instant messanger program that Beta 3 copies during installation... If it is there it means you installed the Beta 3 to correct directory... If it is not there again beta 3 is installed at a different location... Just install again but keep in mind you have to choose the half-life directory not the nsp directory when it asks for installation path...

did all of what u adised and still nothing.
i should just delete NS and forget about it... no gamer should go through this much for any game..
oh well i'll just try again when im less frustrated with all this
We will only have 156 TSA left! Ahem. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Did you check that beta 3 was installed in the right place? Just checking.
I would personally trawl through my C:\ looking for traces of Steam/ns in places where it shouldn't be. Then purging them.
Well, I have Steam on D:\, but still.
BTW, you dont need to download too many files. The ns 1 release, then the beta3 patch. It is cumulative, so includes beta2.
Reinstall nsbeta3 and check to see if it IS putting the files in your steam directory.
HTH.
