Major Fps Problem....

<div class="IPBDescription">...drops to about 6fps</div> Right this is an fps problem and before anyone says, I HAVE READ THE TWO FPS FAQ'S AT THE TOP OF THIS FORUM AND FOLLOWED THEM EXACLY.

Right, with that out the way,

I have 2 computers, one runs NS fine and the other DID run NS fine until recently. They both share the same internet connection (600kb cable) and this is not the problem.

Basically when I start NS it joins the server fine. When in game the fps drops significantly from about 60fps to 5-7fps. It's really unplayable. Its not the best computer in the world, but its been running NS fine until about 3 days ago. The specs are:

OpenGL
1.0ghz AMD athlon (dunno number)
16MB Nvidia Vanta card (Updated to latest drives, not very good but it worked up until now)
196MB RAM
20GB hard drive
Crap monitor but set to 85hz refresh rate. (also running at 800 x 640)

Please Help,

Squinage

P.S. Plz no "buy a new computer/gfx card" posts, im just a poor student <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

One word, Heat? When was the last time you cleaned out the inside of the computer? Did a fan die? Maybe the Vid Card gave up the ghost?

    -edit- BTW nice avatar <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

hmm, i dont think ive ever cleaned it. ill give that a try.

i did do a little experiment, i when back to NS 2.0 on the computer and the fps is fine, maybe beta 3 is still a bit unfinnished atm but i can wait, it'll be worth it when the final release is out.

I'm kind of bumping this because I have the same problem.

Not a high end machine, but really should be sufficient for ns:
    - Windows 2000 pro (don't start with me on win xp please)
    - 512 mb ddr
    - 2100xp+ AMD processor
    - Geforce 4 TI4400 128 mb

My fps was 99, then a week ago it started dropping down to 7 fps for half a second every minute or so. Once it dropped to 4 fps, ns went matrix style on me with really cool slowed sound effects and my pc crashed...

So, 4 days ago I decided to format my main partition, it was fairly cluttered and needed a clean up anyway, several people advised me to try it as a fix, so I did.

I reinstalled it, slapped on all necessary drivers, programs and games and played NS. It ran as smooth as a babys bottom. Yet today it started to "freeze up" again, which is what it feels like when your fps drops to 4 for just a while, it's not precisely like lagging imo. So, I'm clueless. I haven't installed anything since I reinstalled the software (programs, drivers, games etc), it ran fine for two days, and now it's back again.

I've ruled out the possibility of overheating by trying at different times and checking the temperature.

In general fps in the current beta is alot lower than in previous versions for alot of people, it's understandable, since it's a beta, but this is unplayable if you have this specific problem <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Please *do* note that the problem reoccurs after a format and reinstall, so basically the pc is "clean" (no spyware or whatever, I checked... three times) so to speak.

So, unless someone comes forward with a magic fix, I'll have to wait it out untill the next beta/full version <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Cheers,

I had a few problems after the steam update and I know a little bit about ThinG's problem too so I'll post in case any of it helps.

ThinG was advised on a fresh install given that he had viruses and trojans on his PC for an undetermined amount of time and he had been silently suffering several odd phenomenom for a while that indicated some damage had been done to the base opperating system. Please ThinG, re-check that you haven't fallen foul of the same thing again.

A free online scan is available <a href='http://housecall.trendmicro.com/' target='_blank'>here</a> and there are several free offers from AV companies too.

I had a fps issue with a combination of 'pop-up stopper' and 'ez-trust AV'. Unfortunately my old AV software expired and I had a free offer from CA for ez-trust so I installed it, then messed with steam for 24 hours then tried to play. Eventually I located that mouse movement was using 100% cpu, causing huge fps loss and lagg. Uninstalling ez-trust took the mouse cpu use down to 25-30%. Removing 'pop-up stopper' took it to 0% and re-installing ez-trust did not adversly affect this.

Also try using the task manager to monitor the cpu use while in game.
Go to view / update speed / low , then play for 30 minutes and take a look when you exit and see if cpu directly correlates to the low fps or lag times.

Then when Steam had finished I had lots of lag, ping spikes and choke. I found (Shockwaves found it first) that steam had set my network settings to that of a 14.4 modem.

    I manually set rate 9999 ; cl_updaterate 30 ; cl_cmdrate 30 and everything was ok again.

Run net_graph 3 and post a few images of what it looks like while you are lagging, also ensure that ALL software is closed while you are playing. If the problems do not occur when you disable all software then you have found the problem <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Hmm seems a temporary solution is adding "Developer 1" to the autoexec.cfg to remove the fps cap. Now I'm on 170 fps, the drops are probably still there, but since it's 170 fps down to 60 fps fps I don't notice it anymore. At least I can play again.

You have a old processor, and an old video card. I suggest upgrading, otherwise, your stuck with those crappy fps.

He's not talking about "general" bad fps, he's talking about the *drops* that also occur on my machine which is quite good.

I have recently encountered the same problem when I installed my new computer, a AMD64 with a Radeon 9800 PRO. I belive there is some kind of rouge program running in the background, im scanning right now. Otherwise, try to change from open gl to d3d or the other way.

Sounds like a virus or spyware...

download Spybot and Adaware and AVG, update and run them all <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
