Brief question, seems valid enough

Size of buildings?
What size is the armory and such? Quake 2's Gloom and Quake 3's "Art of War", even the turrets and supply depots for the Engineer in Team Fortress are incredibly small models, the player is usually twice the size of the building, and that's always erf'ed me, will the buildings be that small, bigger, or realisticly big?

Anywhere from slightly shorter to the same size as a man, height-wise. I don't know what 'realistically big' is, as technological innovation usually shrinks devices. Perhaps in 'NS2: The Civil War™' we can have wagons...

Structures. Not buildings. 'Building' tends to imply you can go inside them, which you cannot.

For example, an unbuilt armory:

realistic would be a LOT bigger than humans BUUUUUT! realistic nswise would be the size their now because you don't expect someone 2 go into a huge building (which hl might not support anyhoo) and build armor

If the buildings were any bigger, they would be too easy of targets (I think I just butchered English right there).

Fam is that the old LMG model? HMG? If its any of those models older versions then I must say, the new ones are FAR superior.

that thing in the top right, is that the map? shouldn't it be transparent? and isn't it way too bright and difficult to see things in?
• JediYoshiJediYoshi The Cupcake Boss Join Date: 2002-05-27 Member: 674Members
It looks better here. I'm sure it was some kind of bug or something. And yes, it is the map layout.

BTW: Don't be silly LiveWire, we didn't mean anything agsint ya

i think that is still way too bright. it needs contrast. why isn't the majority part of it black?

Here's a question, what is the biggest structure in NS, excluding hives. And does the size of structures affect the building time it takes a marine?
• GobyWanGobyWan Join Date: 2002-02-22 Member: 234Members
The problem with the HUD and minimap being bright is either a bug with that particular build or someone increasing the brightness of the image in Photoshop so we could actually see the armoury. Either way, it's not in the finished game.

If I remember correctly all the pictures have been photoshopped so that you can see clearer (I dont remember why but the screenshots were coming out darker than they should be, something along those lines anyway).
I believe it was Monse who said that they had been photoshopped and the maps look alot better in game.

I could be wrong but Im about 90-95% sure

Natural Selection has a special entity called env_gamma - it is adjustable by the mapper, and in its simplest incarnation serves to increase contrast (shadows are fun).

Unfortunately, HL screenshots don't capture env_gamma settings, so MonsE uses a magical formula in Photoshop to re-value the screenshots. You can see the difference in the two pics on this page.

guys it's not the brightness or gamma of the screenshots coz everything in those shots looks fine except the map view. it's just i'm confused as to why part of the map view is not black. i would assume that the map view shows what is places you can go and what is places you cannot go because it is the void. why is the void not black? it would make that map view easier to see things in, and it would make the whole screen easier to see things in without some bright white box in the top-right corner glaring in your eyes. don't you get annoyed that in internet explorer when you want to look at a picture, the area surrounding the picture is white and not black. i wonder who came up with that idea. it's like if a cinema doesn't turn off the lights when the movie comes on. anyway the map view should be designed so that things that are most likely to take up the most pixels in it use the darkest colors while the things most likely to take up the least pixels in it use the brightest colors. that's my opinion anyway.

Let me build on what coil said. To make the pics look the way they do ingame MonsE has to run em through some stuff in Photoshop, unfortunatly this has the unfortanate side effect of washing out the map. The map does not look the way it does in that pic, it has plenty of contrast.

i think we are getting confused between the whole screen and the box on the top right of the screen.

We don't know. None of the playtesters have complained about it, so it means they see nothing wrong with it. Please put some trust in them, they are just players like you.

wouldn't it be better if the background of the minimap view was black. it's more realistic anyway; why would a marine have his HUD using more power than necessary? especially to shine more light in his eyes when he has to look for monsters in the dark.

1: Reason above

2: The MOD isn't aimming for realism
