If someone else has registered your cd-key with Steam, you will not be able to play. At all. Even when they are not playing. Yeah. It sucks. 3 of my 6 copies dont work as they are second hand, and the original owner has registered the keys.
Sigh.
EDIT: Oh yeah. You can play ns3 with WON though. Just copy your Steam installation for NS over your WONID-based NS2. Yes, it works. You just need to find a won server running the same thing... :S
We did it on my LAN until the Offline play was working. (As of this Wednesday)
theres about 8, 2 are Australian the rest are elsewhere probably america. 1 server is usually full (20 players) and the rest are just really laggy and empty.

I would recommend buying one second hand for £2 off eBay, but now I find that the original owners have already registered it on steam.
Steam is the ultimate evil, yet the NS community uses it anyways
realllly OT: Linux is good? Linux torched my useraccount and killed the mbr, all because I wanted to open an mp3 file!!! I'm all for oss, but not something that's bloated, slow, buggy, counter-intuitive and doesnt have decent hard/software support. (yes, I've tried several distro's, they all failed at one point or another)
ontopic: yeah, no options. Valve is shutting won down, it's only a matter of time.. besides, steam isn't -that- bad and they recently hired the guy who 'invented' bittorrent which is good. unless they want to use the bandwidth of all the steam-users to upload files. o_O

remove steam?.. well, i DID pay for that account .. and,
I gave them 60 guilders (or something like that, too long ago to remember =D ) and they gave me -6- years of entertainment and a wide variety of free mods That's a whole lotta bang for your buck. :/
OTOH - after all the HL2 lies, I really don't care anymore..

I am a big linux fan, (lih-nux ) and have used a copy of Red Hat for some time now. IT's nto the best distro for personal use, but it's good fun to try and configure it. Hardly any of the distros are as easy to use as windows, but that's because we all have "grown-up" on the bloated ms monstrosity.
However, I love WinXp's networking abilities, so IMO:
XP Pro > Linux > Win 98 > Win2k > Winxp home > WinNT3+
Then anything below that, ie, WinME (ickickick) 3, 3.1, NT2 and below, 2, 1.01, 1, IBM PC2, etc. I would not touch.
for more info on Linux distros that may be more suited to your tastes Bo Selecta, head for: http://www.linuxiso.org/
Out of the main ones (listed middle of page,) "Gentoo" is by far the simplest out of the ones I have seen/tried. HTH.
yeh, mine was second hand, got it from by pals bro' and that filthy basterd steamed the key b4 i did
Anyway, now I have proven my loyalty to valve by buying hl for 15$ at spaceworld.
Ay... same here. I actually bought the game before and steamed it a LONG time ago; back when the account name wasn't simply your email address... and guess what, I can't remember it anymore. I have several second hand keys that also have been steamed... and I really don't feel like buying the game again (right now I'm playing NS 2.0 on WON).

Damn eBayers. "This game's serial will work online".

Ns3+ is Steam only.
