Why Insomnia Sucks

So it's 6:06AM for me right now. I tried sleeping @ 4:30ish. Spent the next hour and a half trying to sleep...didn't work.

Now this wouldn't be so irritating...if it didn't happen EVERY FREAKING NIGHT. This is the 2nd night out of 5 sleepless nights that I just gave up and decided to not sleep at all.

Heck, Tues. Night/Wed. Morning, the last all-nighter, I tried reading a Comparitive Gov't book, hoping the German political system would put me to sleep...no luck. (btw, Germany has a really nice political system, as does Britain).

Any suggestions for being able to SLEEP?

Stop thinking so hard about it? Heavy sedatives? Hard drinking?

No matter how hard I try ever since puberty for me (7 years ago , I'm 19), I slink into this strange nocturnal sleep schedule. I sleep from probably 10am-12pm, then awake at around 8 or 9pm. I operate fantastic during the hours between, and no matter how hard I try staying on a "regular" schedule It won't work. Thank god I can schedule my class as easily as I can....All I have to say is, unless you absolutely MUST sleep like a regular person let nature take its course.

I have the same problem, I'm having problems sleeping. Earlier this week I went to bed about 11:30 pm, but I was still awake 2 am. But when I eventually do fall in sleep, waking up is hell.

the key to any sleeping schedule isn't when you go to sleep... it's when you get up =P
Thanks to student life my sleeping times were wrecked several times over. From all my attempts to right it I found the most successful was getting up at a strictly set time. It basically works by forcing yourself to always get up at that time, no matter what. Sure you'll be tired but it means you're more likely to fall asleep at the right times ^^

As for insomnia, for a lot of people it's usually caused by something working over in your mind. Whether it's stress related, something you're just thinking about or lots of lil things. Films are pretty good to get you drowsy; all that sitting about inactive and using your mind so little (books at least involve imagination so they're more likely to keep you awake) tends to get you ready for sleepy land, not to mention it'll help to distract you from whatever's really keeping you awake =3

edit: worst comes to worst you can always start learning meditation. I used to do it a long time ago and back then I had the soundest sleep I've had my whole life =P

Get off the computer half an hour earlier before you go to sleep. Otherwise your mind is working too much thinking about stuff(Even if your just chatting on irc or aim or whatever) It helps me, and i have really bad insominia.(Takes me like 2 hours to finnaly get to sleep)

ive had it a couple of times, tho it was stress related insomnia.

stress or nerves .. the worst.

all i can say is, do NOT try to get to sleep. dont think about it. listen to music, or a book on tape or something

movies are good if you have seen them already make you fall asleep by forcing yourself to watch it. if your reading a book, just keeeeeeeep reading .. who cares if you fall asleep with the light on, you got to sleep!

    neway .. good luck

Personally? I've always had troubles with sleep. Once (i've told this before) during my first year of college i went from sunday morning (8am) till early friday morning (3 am) without sleep... WITHOUT SLEEP. I fell asleep leaning against my fridge, when i woke up i had burns all over my arms from the cooling coils (like blisters were covering my arms bad). What did i do? did i go get help? no i rolled over and went to sleep for 6 hours till my roommate came into the room screaming my arms were burnt. Still have 2 scars from the harshest burns from that.

Now i can sleep pretty much whenever i want... for as long as i want. My cure for insomnia? I hate to say this... but my solution came in an herbal package, green mind you... always put me right to sleep.

Welcome to my world Smoke. Generally I'm forced to watch HBO B-Movies until 3 am every night, then my eyes close out of simple exhaustion and I slip into a dreamless sleep and wake up the next morning.

The watching movies, reading or anything like that are out of the question...*shakes angry fist at roommate who have little brains and thus no roving thoughts*

But if you cant sleep, try going to bed like, super early. Sixish.

I drink Caffeine Free soda, and that's about 8 - 10 hours before I try to go to sleep.

Personally, I think it's just the fact that I can't have my Adagio for Strings playing when I go to sleep.

Nyquil is my friend, the only problem is that its also my enemy when I try to get up in the morning....

We know very well that insomnia sucks... what to do about it is the question. By the way, as I write it's 1:15am here and I'm still exhausted from not sleeping properly for several nights.

Oh well. I think I might go read some more of The Bourne Identity. At least then I'll have something interesting to do with my brain while I'm not resting it anyway.

insomnia suxxor dood. Not to worry you but I've heard that that you can develop parkison and demens with a lack of sleep over a long time, or so they told me. I think they are trying to scare me into sleeping

I would suggest attempting a 6:00 hour sleep system (lengthened or shortened depending on how it works out). During the summer I'm sortof an insommniac...I guess I'm the complete opposite of everyone else - I can't sleep without at least a little bit of stress.

Summer = no school = nothing to do = nothing to worry about...

Then again, I'm past high school now so I get more to think about, and get to sleep better (even during summer - usually).

When I try to sleep, I climb in to bed, make sure it's slightly off from the temperature of the season (warmer than usual in winter, cooler than usual in summer). Then you try to find a fairly uncomfortable posistion (yea, you heard me right). Start thinking of cool stuff, stuff you want to think about (but you gotta be careful you don't go into a spiral of thought, like I do sometimes; they go on for 20 minutes, and that doesn't help). Eventually, when you're in your cool strain of thought, turn into your nice, comfortable posistion, and relax thinking about your thought.

Eventually you should just not bother thinking about it anymore (you actually want to sortof try not to keep bringing the thought back, if it's slipping away - although if you get a good lyric or poem or story or something, you might want to write it down).

Or you could do some exercising right before bed. Most people say it wakes them up, and I know it doesn't do much for your metabolism, because it's better to work out in the morning for that...but it works for me.

Cleaning works too, if you don't have a roommate. Ahhh, the times I've been up at 4am with nothing to do, and decided to go through old school notebooks.

    ....Yes, I'm exceptionally weird .

Suggestions for going to sleep. Hmmmmm... Pain. Lots and lots of pain. If you get enough, you should pass out.
