Can someone guide me to an article where the system reqs are for NS 2.0 and 3.0? I haven't played NS since July 2003

As far as I know, you only have to meet the Steam system requirements and you will be fine. Also, I don't think that the system requirements have changed since then.

the requirements for hl go up exponentially with each patch. With retail half-life you can play it confortably on a 500mhz with a vodoo 2. With hl 1.8.2 or whatever you need to play ns 2.01 on, you need at least a 1ghz with a geforce 2.

Now with steam on my 1.6Ghz on a geforce 4mx i dont always get the full 60fps on 1280x1024. So yer thats a lil info about steam and requirements.

A bit off topic, but if you look at the compiled survey Steam did with the last update you can see a lot of players using GF4 mx and other budget cards, no wonder they get low FPS even with a fast CPU.

Meh...
I use gf2 mx400 and still get 60 fps in some areas at 1024x768, though the particle system will drop my fps to 15
My brother uses an AMD Duron 700mhz and has still lower fps with the same video board.
Also, it seems that in the near future HT will be a requirement and we will also have to buy 64-bit cpu, boards and Windows.

They are CPU bound most of the time anyway. Graphics cards have been getting faster faster than CPU's have (), since half-life is old this means that HL uses CPU intensive, modified quake 1 and quake 2 methods for physics, entity handling, occlusion culling and rendering.

Even on a gf4 mx440 and an athlon XP 2400 or p4 2.4 GHz your going to be CPU bound most of the time unless your playing at high resolutions(or with AA turned on) or there are lots of sprites(think smoke, resource nozzles, umbra, rain, bilebomb spam).

HL does not use high end cards very well, it does a lot of things in software that it doesn't have to and it uses few of the newer features on cards.

I was under the impression that graphics card mattered tons more than processor these days...

but anyway, I think you'll probably be fine on your system, Rhino, provided you have at least 128 megs of ram and you keep your ram completely free except for the game... I mean, you can set your graphics settings to the lowest possible and NS is still just as fun, IMO :>

...and only 0.64% of ppl use win98! :O!

As for the poor guy running 55million colours.. .ROFLROFLROFL...
(Human eye can't see that many)

You can play ns with p3 450s no probs; you just need to run at a lower resolution with 16bit colour. Not that it makes much difference.

Besides, when you end the game Kills 3 Deaths 45, you can blame it on the hardware.
