The thing is a lot of more powerful kharaa attacks are all melee attacks.. But you cannot guarantee that every melee swing you deal is going to hit.. That's where focus comes in.. Having rapid close range attack rate is useless unless it's against a building or a marine is stupid enough to just stand there and let you bite him to death.
Despite the lowered damage over time, I take focus with Onos quite often in Classic for base-busting. Sure, giving up scent of wallhax is risky, but focus is a poor man's adrenaline - so you can get celerity, whack their base until the HMGers show up, and have plenty of energy to charge out of there. Celerity charge is mega-fast.
Granted, it's easier to kill marines with gore without focus usually, but your energy runs out pretty damn fast when you're holding down non-focus gore.
For some people its easier to kill with focus, some it's harder. Personaly if dont get focus if I go onos since its easier to kill without it as onos, and I get it for all other lifeforms since personly it's easier to kill. I like getting Focus, Celerity, Leap and safe for Fade if I want to end a game quickly since I can leap over the people and bite their head.
Lerk-Primal with focus or without will quickly shred a HA easily Focus onos-Mega 1 hit kill for level 3 armor marine, bad vs HA Note only when maxed is the results above

90 even. That means 180 focus(or nonfocused against buildings, since onos gore does 2x to buildings). <!--QuoteBegin-Mradyfist+,--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Mradyfist @ ,)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Ok, here's my question.. a lot of people are claiming that the manual is wrong about the numbers on focus. focus only owns in combat because marines don't all have level one armour for AGES. I have played games where we were getting pwed by focus skulks, as everyone had gone for shotguns. I got armour 2 and resuply (3 focus bites to kill me) and managed to clear our spawn of skulks, then we all got back in the game and was even until JPs appeared then we happily owned the hive.
Focus is only good as marines go for guns rather than armour for some unkown reason. I have even seen marines with level 3 HMG and no armour upgrades! Madness.
First off, with armor 2 and resupply it still only takes 2 focus bites to kill. Secondly, you can't just look at raw damage over time or whether focus gets you one-hit kills to determine how useful it is. Focus changes the way you can fight. It allows you to be more deliberate and more certain that each hit connects, since you have twice the time to prepare it. In addition, I agree with what was said earlier: it makes hit and run tactics much more effective. You move in, attack, and move out, minimizing the damage you take.
Now that I've been spoiled by focus, I have trouble playing without it (save as an onos). The fade "blink in, 1 focus swipe, blink out" owns... I've chewed up a few HA trains that way. Plus, focus allows me to forego(sp) adren in favor of celerity. As a skulk, I find the focus bite, dodge, focus bite much more effective than bitespam.

Resupply first? GG focus.
Dmg one first? Wow. You can kill all skulks more menicingly, yet not any quicker (after 8 shots the skulk survives with 2 hp instead of 10. With either amount of HP it's only going to take one more shot. You'll kill a cara skulk 1 bullet faster.) And GG focus.
Anything else first? READ: Resupply first?
Btw... armor 2 and resuply is only 3 focus bites against a lerk. Otherwise you're mistaken.
And yes, focus is useless because the first thing that runs through a typical rine player's mind is, "uh-oh. Aliens approching. Better stand as still as I can so they can bite me and kill me faster than if they didn't have focus." <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Don't say "good skulks don't miss" because even if that is true, there's this little thing called knock-back. It knocks the rine back after hitting him. Making it impossible to land those 2 bites to deal as much as focus right away. And I'm not even gonna begin to discuss why focus lerks and fades own, other than- Hit and move.
focus does +50% (.5) damage/hit and -33% (1/3) hits/second. damage/second= hitdmg*rof for every 1hitdamage per 1 hitsecond focous does 1.5 hitdamage per .66 hitsecond these are caluculated seperately
the tabel is thus: lvl 0 1 dmg/dmg * 1 sec/sec = 1hitdmgsec/hitdmgsec (ie for every 1 damage/sec delt, compared to the same without focus, it deals one damage/sec) lvl 1 1.5 damage/hit * .67 hit/sec= 1damage/sec. dot=1 lvl 2 2.25 damage/hits * .44 hit/sec= 1dmg/sec dot=1 lvl 3 3.375 dmg/hit *.30 hit/sec= 1dmg/sec dot=1
as you see, DOT with focus is exactly the same as without focus. this is because the 3/2 damage and the 2/3 rof are calculated seperately, then applied to each other. (3/2 times 2/3 always equils 1). when people say focus deals less dot, they have the numbers backwards (ie +.33 damage and -50 rof) and do not apply each bonus seperately. this is what the natural selection damage caluclator does. this method of calculation maxes out focus damage at 2x (instead of 3.375) AND lowers the RoF of all 3rd lvl focus wepons to 0. in which case focus does 1/3 less dot per lvl. scince focusbite fires (and hence doesnt have a rof of 0) either dot is the same or flyra uses several drastically different formulas for caluclating focus damage and rof, and all the numbers flyra provides in the manual v.2 are wrong.

lerk+flocus+cele+adre=ownage
with the lerk you just keep flying and biting ONCE and going up again, bite ONCE up again. it works.
in co i usually go
unlock>focus>carapace>adre(for extreme leaping)>rege>cele>le>rk>scent
focus does +50% (.5) damage/hit and -33% (1/3) hits/second.
