I've had a few of our old regulars return to NS after a break and run into these problems. The fix seems to be close to whats been said but with one significant change. I've not looked in details at the whys and the whatsits but this should work.
Granny, you say steam works for you. You can join a Half-Life game online and play that against other people. If this is the case you are 90% there.
What I am going to suggest now is that you start again as far as Natural-Selection is concerned and do a complete install from scratch in the same way those of us that played from the start of beta 3 have done.
First off ensure that you have 3 files. I have linked to them here, if you cant find them just click.
Right now your all set, here goes.
[1] Stop Steam Right click on the little black icon on the taskbar(next to the clock) and select 'Exit and Logout'. You may have to confirm that you want to logout of steam.
[2] Go to where steam has installed Half-Life This is likely to be C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\you@email.addy\Half-Life
[3] Inside the Half-Life Folder you will find a folder called NSP This is the Natural-Selection install. Delete, or more safely move this folder. Drive space allowing I could suggest you move it to My Documents for safe keeping. Although it shouldn't be required.
[4] Start steam and check that Natural-Selection (beta) is not listed under 'Third Party Games'
[5] Stop Steam Right click on the little black icon on the taskbar(next to the clock) and select 'Exit and Logout'. You may have to confirm that you want to logout of steam.
[6] Run the NS3 beta 1 installer just double click on ns_install_v3_b1.exe and follow the prompts, you may have to wait 10-15 seconds for steam to clear from memory. You may need or want to reboot afterwards.
[7] Start steam and check Natural-Selection(Beta) is listed under 'Third Party Games', double click it to check it runs. When you get the the Natural-Selection menu select quit.
[8] Stop Steam Right click on the little black icon on the taskbar(next to the clock) and select 'Exit and Logout'. You may have to confirm that you want to logout of steam.
[9] Run the NS3 beta 2 Patch installer just double click on ns_install_v3_b2_patch.exe and follow the prompts, you may have to wait 10-15 seconds for steam to clear from memory. It may ask you where you want to install although it is almost certain to detect the installation. You may need or want to reboot again afterwards.
[10] Start steam and check Natural-Selection(Beta) is listed under 'Third Party Games', double click it to check it runs. When you get the the Natural-Selection menu select quit.
[11] Stop Steam Right click on the little black icon on the taskbar(next to the clock) and select 'Exit and Logout'. You may have to confirm that you want to logout of steam.
[12] Run the NS3 beta 3 Patch installer just double click on ns_v30_b3_patch.exe and follow the prompts, you may have to wait 10-15 seconds for steam to clear from memory. It may ask you where you want to install although it is almost certain to detect the installation. You may need or want to reboot again afterwards.
[13] Start steam and check Natural-Selection(Beta) is listed under 'Third Party Games', double click it to check it runs. When you get the the Natural-Selection menu select 'Find server'. Find a server where the game is listed as 'Natural Selection beta 3' and try to join. I am fairly confident you'll have success.

I am sorry if these instructions seem a bit long winded but I tried not to miss anything out. If you get caught at any point just quote the number you got stuck on and how and we'll take it from there.
what i did was uninstalled NS, then installed ns v3.0 beta1, then removed the map folder and placed it somewhere else, then installed the ns 3.0 beta3 patch, then replaced the map files that had not been placed the the map directory from the patch. seems to work now.
i am guessing that when i install the beta 3 patch over the beta 1 version, it doesn't write over the files. might only be my computer, but they might want to have a look at that.
Wow Eaglec! You must really know me! I "need" long winded instructions...I just copied your orders here, and it's printing out as I type this. THANK YOU! I have a busy morning here, but plan to follow your step by step instructions, and see if that helps any. I will come back and let ya'll know, plus, like you suggested, I will let you know (if there are any) where the hang-ups occur, and give that information. I sure hope this works for me.
