I walked right into it...
ever *know* a file has a virus and run it anyway? yeah, I just did... got an email seemingly from my school email host, saying my account was going to be disabled and I should see the attached file. The e-mail seemed authentic, it knew what school I was from, my email host and all... even so, of course I'm not stupid enough to run an attachment without virus scanning... the attachment had no extension, so right-clicking on it didn't give me the option to virus scan the file, I guess because it wasn't an executable... so I ran my virus scanner on the whole directory... AVG said it was clean... so I'm thinkin', AVG says the directory is clean, it has no extension, and it seems to really be from my school email people... so I double clicked it. yeah, now there are copies of I-Worm/Bagle.J all over my HD hope it cleans up alright...

Ouch, that sounds harsh. I hope you get everything cleaned, and that none of your files are corrupted in the end. I just cleaned 128 viruses from my machine about a week ago because someone got on my computer and opened an infected e-mail attachment.

    I know how it is....

Apparentyl my stupid little sister was checking her e-mail in my computer about a month ago, and she opened an unkown attachment. Let's just say I had to format my whole computer cause the virus had basically destroyed everything...

exactly the same thing happenned to me! Well, except I didn't open the attachement. But seemed weird that I was sent a virus through my school host.

yeah, another friend said it just happened to her too... guess it's the latest thing... so if you get something apparently from your school email host, don't open it

Set your mail client to move any files with attachments to a "Quarantine" folder, then email the person who sent the attachment to you and ask if they sent it, what it as, and why they sent it.

Yeah, but eventually along will come a virus that catches emails sent back from targetted victims, then send back another response saying something like "yeah its clean i sent it, download, here it is again"

thats the problem... its a cycle. security counters it, it evolves or sidesteps, then security counters, and it evolves or sidesteps... =\

Edit: And since computers are evoling all the time as well, you can't just go "Hey let's just keep countering it when they come, and then they'll run out of exploits to use!"

That's about as dumb as saying "lets not treat terminal diseases because it might make the bacteria/virus immune to that drug". If something very simple counters >99% of script kiddie viruses then thats a good thing™.
