How Do You Do It?

<div class="IPBDescription">kill without biting</div> I'm ashamed to admit I see a disparity between my skill as skulk/fade and the skill of my fellow aliens.

Occasionally as a marine I will be in a situation where, as a marine, a lone skulk will come leaping at me, or a fade will blink at me in its special twisted parody of a crucifix. When that happens, I often die. Even if I'm at full health and armor. Armor 2, that is. My death icon shows a bite/swipe, but I have no memory of such an animation taking place. It's as if their very touch tore my soul from my body.

Yet when I'm a skulk, I can usually get the first hit in, but very very rarely does it kill the marine. I've tried practicing leap/bite fastswitching, but I've yet to accomplish a similar feat. So tell me, alien gurus, what the **** am I doing wrong?

    Silence? Lag compensation?

Leap, then leap again, then bite

First leap moves you, second finishes movement and adds ~30 damage, then a focus bite = DEATH

Most servers on steam lag when multiple entities interact. Animations are cut when lag get's high. Add in silence, and they appear to just brush past you and make you die.

In many combat games, I've seen Fades, Skulks and Lerks do these flybys over and over again - and ig bugs me that I cant even do it once!

Is it possible to do these things wihtout the use of a blink/leap/fly + attack script?

I dont like the fact that Im getting owned by teenagers using scripts, but I can live with it if I know they do it 'the old fashioned way' and switch attack all the time.

    Any thoughts from you guys?

    I know, its not entirely on-topic in this thread, but its connected <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Either bind a handy key to "lastinv", or use hud_fastswitch 1 and then hit the number keys.

    the way I do it:

    select slash
    select blink
    blink to target
use last used weapon button and slash

Yep same... and if you time bite/slash right (just as soon as geting in bite/slash range, before touching the marine) and kill the marine then you would continue your movement without slowing down... That looks like you just leap/blink killed the marine without biting... No need for scripts... Just practice switching weapons in the air... You can easly do that if you practice alot considering latency which is quite important for timing... So try to practice on servers that have same latency; after geting used to; you can practice for high latency situations... Dont forget Celerity also increases air speed... Practice with and without celerity seperately; You will get less confused...

    Have Fun...

There's currently a bug with lastinv (lag effects its) so might not want to use that for now. It's till fine for pulling out a welder or something, but it's often not fast enough to go back from leap to bite.

There is an difference between the animation of the attack and the execution of the attack. When you blink, then lastinv, then swipe, if you lastinv really close to your attack, it will finish the weapon draw animation <b>but still attack and do damage</b>. This is a known bug and as far as i know the same thing is seen both client-side and third-person (although since the third-person weapon draw animation for swipe is non-existant, you see nothing).

Same thing goes for leap-bite. It has nothing to do with scripts, just the timing of the weapon switch, which you can easily execute with <i>lastinv</i>. You should still hear the attack, however (if you would hear it under normal circumstances).

Leap bite with focus kills any la or jp marine, i use num 0 for my last weapon used key, and the arow keys to move, have leap selected, leap hit num 0 mid leap and bit as i land on em, on the rare acasion either leap or bit misses i leap out and repeat. I also have fast switch, cus not having it is realy anoying to someone taht changes weapons often. Just remember not to sit on a rines ankles, doesnt help and give them an easier target. make strafing runs

No it doesn't. A focus bite will kill a marine with less than around 40 armor points (level 1), and leap occasionally allows you do do a bit more damage (kill a level 2 armor marine just barely). You could have level 100 armor but no armor points left and still die to one focus bite.

JP are exactly the same as LA except faster moving.

Actually, your math is flawed, though you are correct in the sense that focus will not kill in one hit to all vanilla or JP rines.

Think about it- focus doubles attack damage, correct? Should a lv 0 armor rine take 1 bite from a non-focused skulk, he lives with 75 hp, dieing in one more bite. Should this rine have 26 armor instead of 25, he will live with 77 hp, enableing him to take yet another bite and survive with 2 hp.

So all a rine needs to survive a focus bite is 26 or more armor.

My problem is when I use lastinv there is atleast a 2 second delay between attacks and often I have to hit the button 2-3 times for the attack to work. Yet I see skulks leaping and exploding in mid air. I see fades blink and swipe the second they hit the ground.

I have tried using the old bind a bit to one button and leap to another but I cant ever get the binds to work correctly. Sometimes it doesnt switch. Sometimes it does and doesnt attack afterwards. Its very frustrating. If there are people out there that are doing it that way please let us know the commands. How many waits are you using. What order do they go in. etc. Thanks for any help on this matter. <!--emo&::skulk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/skulk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='skulk.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I just use the stock keys. I run around with leap selected, and when I click fire I tap 1 and fire again when I'm at my target. It's all timing. Practice in a local server leaping towards a RT and biting it when you get close. When you see sparks, you know you've done it right.

As for xeno exploding midair, Activate xeno before you head into the room and leap towards your targets. If you try to xeno midair, you'll usually land before you explode as it takes time for you to pop. Sometimes if you've got adren you can usually get off a bite too. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

im extremely good, in combat maps leaping as a skulk, flying as a lerk, or blinking as a fade so that when you hit the marine you still fly past him, dont get caught on him you use your mouse as you fly past him and bite/slash him

skulks and lerks i find myself doing it from the right side because it is easier to move your mouse to the left if you are right handed

lerks, i do it from above so it is harder to hit me, then i loop around the base and regen the little health lost and continue

you can rack up scores doing that, i always lerk in combat because the umbra support is needed and few do it also lerks are great for the end game because they arent meant to kill the comm chair, only the spawning marines
