Omg My Usb Ports R Teh H4x0red!

<div class="IPBDescription">Or 'Why WinXP don't detect my USB ports'</div> OK, here's the deal. First day I bought my PC, fine no biggy with the USB ports.

Then about 2 months later (I think) ALL USB ports stopped working for some weird reason.

Tried reinstalling, no success. Checked Hardware Manager, and it won't detect my USB ports at all.

So does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I also tried checking the mobo for problems and found none (not caring about the warranty BTW, because they're most probably gonna give me second hand parts.....lousy customer service in HK I say)

Stuff I tried :
<b> Reinstalling WinXP Pro
Checking mobo for problems
Formatting and reinstalling
Punching my PC on the tower case (away from the ports)
Plugging in a PCI USB extension
</b>

And specs...

Geforce 4 MX440
30GB Seagate HDD 7200rpm
Onboard soundcard
Shuttle mini-ATX mothrboard (no idea what model, which is what I hate about HK)

I hear you can use teh registry h4x to fix it, but I have absolutely no idea at all how to do that. Anyone can help finding it so that I can try it?

It could easily be a fault in the hardware itself. A broken wire is all it takes. The problem could also be in the other end of the hardware (whatever you're plugging in), but I'm guessing from your description that you've tried other hardware with no luck.

If that's the case, your best best will probably be to just buy a PCI USB expansion card.

Another option is drivers, but the standard USB ones should be fine. Look around on some manufacturer's websites that are related to your pc and see if anyone else is having problems.

Tried and done. Might try the drivers though. I think somehow my PC excludes them. I found an article in Microsoft abou USB devices not responding and tried to edit the registry to check if that's the case....

    Problem? IT'S NOT THERE!
The key HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Usb simply doesn't exist.

So yeah, gonna try that driver thingy first.

EDIT : Shocking thing I've noticed....usbhub.sys and usbport.sys don't exist on my PC for some weird reason....

You didn't mess around with the XP service packs, did you? USB 2.0 ports won't work unless you have a certain one installed (I think it's #1, but I could be wrong).

hmm if you're using a usb keyboard, can you use it before the loading (check bios)?
If you can't, try getting into the bios and turning on the legacy usb support, and try again with an usb keyboard. If it works, the problem is with windows. If it doesn't, the problem is with the board.

I've had something like five or six USB ports on motherboards die on me. I just bought a PCI card with three or four USB ports usually and stuck that in.

What do you have on the BUS? Unplug everything, and reinstall it all one at a time. Don't use a hub, and make sure your connections go under 6 feet. It might be that you are over-taxing the bus.

If you are using USB 2.0, make sure you've installed Service Pack 1.

Also, list the USB Devices in question.
