and reasons why
Get voting!

Arcade - Outrun
Magical Sound Shower. Last Wave. And every bit inbetween.

PlayStation - Parappa the Rapper
The lyric 'I am a chicken from the kitchen and I ain't kidding although nothing is written'.

GameGear - Sonic Drift
It's like an (admittedly butchered) mini Outrun with Sonic!

Genesis - Sonic 3 & Knuckles
I can't believe I voted this when I meant the original. Sonic 1 my favourite due to nostalgia (and Green Hill Zone), but S3&K is arguably the last great Sonic game.

Saturn - NiGHTS
Sorry, never played it, just wanted to look hunky.

Nintendo 64 - Zelda: Majora's Mask
I don't love it as much as its hardcore fans, but its use of time travel cannot be overstated.

GameBoy - Tetris
Because it's the only Gameboy cart I still own, and let's face it, you really can lose hours with it.

NES - Balloon Fight
The only reason I still own Animal Crossing is for half hour sessions on Balloon Trip mode.

Super Nintendo - Super Mario Kart
I've typed about three different descriptions for this one, and they all descended into unbridled sobbing and longings for Koopa Beach. Long, tear sodden story short: there's no multiplayer game like the daddy. No exceptions.

VirtualBoy - Count The Migraines
Because really, it was a joke.

Lynx - Chip's Challenge
First console I ever owned, first game I ever loved. I still remember being stuck on a level and failing it repeatedly on purpose (200 times plus) until the skip option appeared, like some benevolent smile of God.

Neo-Geo - Metal Slug
You know, either that or KOF, and I'm a Street Fighter mark.

Amiga - Alien Breed
Best cheat codes ever.

DOS/Windows - Sam & Max: Hit The Road
Poor Monkey Island. Poor Grim Fandango. God, I love them both. So very much. I'm so sorry. Sam & Max, then: you know what, forget it, I'm too depressed that I couldn't vote MI or GF. Fans of videogames champion their hobby's interactive nature, but I wouldn't complain if every other game were like these three.

Dreamcast - Shenmue
Awful game. But, just try to understand - they crammed a world into digital form. For all its flaws, and there were a lot of them, nothing comes as close to being in another life.

PlayStation2 - Gitaroo Man
Undeniably charming. There's no way you could dislike this, and it just so happens the rhythm action is diabolical yet fair every time. Recipe for repeated play. Also, the dog's got a funny accent.

Gamecube - Super Monkey Ball
It's Monkey Ball, a game that should appeal as a novelty for an hour or two but hooks you in until that last master mode level is beat. Hated the SEGA level, though.

Xbox - Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball
Sucker for fan service, love.

GameBoy Advance - Wario Ware: Mega Microgames
Stuff your Advance Wars and FF Tactics. Incredibly inventive, instantly accessible, sheer unadulterated fun (quote-me-do!).

I'm tired now, but I'm sure I'll come back to the Mario Kart and Shenmue ones.

since I always do the GameFAQs poll...

    SNES: chrono trigger, nuff said.
NES: Dragon Warrior IV -- very memorable, well-made game, better than a few of the final fantasies...
Genesis: Shadowrun, because I <3 the shadowrun universe and it's one of the few genesis games I liked :>
GameBoy: Final Fantasy Adventure, cuz the Seiken Densetsu series rawx
PC: Ultima Underworld 2 -- because no game ever immersed me that much before or since, and I'm confident no game ever will. gg Looking Glass.
Playstation: FF Tactics, because of the replayability and awesome story... too bad my copy is scratchxored
PS2: Grand Theft Auto 3, because it was a very well made game that really never gets boring.

Come on! This is a competition to decide the best game ever! You don't have to post massive descriptions, but at least share your entries!

Extremely hard to choose, and really most platforms have multiple superlative games. Nevertheless...

    Arcade - 18 Wheeler
An unusual entry, that's for sure. I have fond memories of a holiday in Majorca, with countless hours spent behind the manly wheel of 18 Wheeler's cabinet., mastering slipstream and low gear shifts for those mountainous roads.
    10-4, good buddy.

    PlayStation - Resident Evil 2
Bit of a fan here; you can't beat this fantastic zombie-fest. It takes all the good juice for the original, cutting the wheat from the chaff and leaving you with a crystal clear concoction of gaming nirvana. Action, narrative, horror, decapitations: RE2 has it in spades.

    GameGear - Sonic the Hedgehog
Basically, a fresh, crisp Sonic adventure in the style of its MegaDrive namesake. Only portable. Bliss.

    MegaDrive - Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Have to agree with you here, Flint. Sonic 1 started it all, but by Sonic 3, Sonic Team were more confident in their art style and more willing to innovate.

    Saturn - Virtua Cop 1 & 2
Can't say I had much experience with the Saturn, but playing these sharp-shooting games with the blue Saturn lightgun was heaps o' fun.

    Nintendo 64 - Goldeneye
Best console First Person Shooter ever, and possibly of all time. Developers, hear my cry! Make a better FPS than this on the console! Because to be better than Goldeneye you had better have your stuff wired tighter than a vice.

    GameBoy - Super Mario Land
A bizarre but sublime take on the Mario universe; this game really made those 8 hour coach journeys to Torquay almost bearable.

    NES - Duck Hunt
Pow! Die you dirty piece of quack!

    Super Nintendo - Super Metroid
Probably the hardest category to choose, this, what with Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island being almost too good. However, I had a fairly dark and adventurous imagination as a boy, and this game really tapped into my love of exploring mysterious places and meeting exotic monsters. Then killing them.

VirtualBoy - Free Cateract Surgery Coupon
"Because really, it was a joke" - Amen.

    Jaguar - Aliens Vs Predator
Haven't had any experience with the Atari Lynx, but I have completed this on the Atari Jaguar. Kinda fun, if a little pixelated. Well, a mediocre experience really, but on a poor console this makes AvP the champion.

    Neo-Geo - Metal Slug
No complaints here: the most intense 2d game in the history of mankind.

    Amiga - Moonstone
An awesome, violent and sadly unknown game for the Amiga. I implore you, look out for this as I believe it's on PC too. In fact, if you find it, PM me 'cause there's an empty space in my heart waiting to be filled by this.

    DOS/Windows - Half-Life
How terribly predictable. It's number 1 for a reason; it's the best. Half-Life has been around for around 5 years now, and it continues to give. Safe to say, only Half-Life 2 is going to be able to knock the champion off its podium.

    Dreamcast - Sonic Adventure
The sense of speed in this game is unparalleled, especially when running down a skyscraper. If you don't find it exhilarating, then you're dead to the world.

PlayStation 2 - Devil May Cry
A game that just makes you feel cool, and I'm talking Fonz-cool not 12-year-old-skater-cool. Shame about the appalling sequel.

    GameCube - Resident Evil Remake
Again, I'm a huge fan of this series, and this reimagining, with its stunning visuals, haunting audio, gameplay innovations in the name of fun and its expanded narrative, is the undisputed king of Survival Horror.

Xbox - Project Gotham Racing 2can't say I really care about the Xbox, but PGR2 is one smooth customer.

GameBoy Advance - Super Mario World
The ultimate platformer, condensed into a convenient format. Thank you very much.

    DOS/Windows - Half-Life

by "awesomeness" i refer to properties of a game that people should all know and that i shouldn't need to explain.

    PlayStation - Metal Gear Solid
for awesomeness, and the best suspense gaming ever.
    Saturn - Vampire Hunter
coolest fighting game of its era.
    Nintendo 64 - Zelda 64
    for awesomeness.
    GameBoy - Pokemon
for a fresh, fun new RPG system back in the day.
    NES - Metroid
for ridiculously cool gaming, old school style.
Super Nintendo - Tales of Phantasia
for a painfully fun SNES RPG
Dreamcast - Marvel vs. Capcom 2
    for awesomeness.
PlayStation2 - Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
for awesomeness, no matter what the purists say.
Gamecube - Super Smash Bros. Melee
for awesomeness. the fun never dies when you've got friends.
    Xbox - Halo
    for awesomeness*6.022x10^23

Not only do you have to register to do this, but you need to give them your email address, and you have to use a well known isp, Laaaaaame.

And knowning Gamefaqs, Final Fantasy 7 will win in every category.

    NES: Final Fantasy Mystic quest
    Cause it will never win

    Cause I'm a fanboy
Windows/Dos: SNESX emulator Final Fantasy 3
    Cause it deserves it
    Neo-Geo: Metal Slug

But it doesnt prevent me from making a list!!!

I'm pretty limited since I've only tried a few choices.

Windows/DOS: Diablo - 'Nuff said? It was a pretty awesome game at it's time and pretty freaky you werent older than me
Playstation: Crash the bandicoot 2 Your pretty standard platform game but you could spend hours sometimes
Gameboy: Pokemon, hand downs. Looking over the brood of ripped-off kids this is actually a pretty good game.

Your kidding right? That was the golden age of gaming I admit, so many great games... but...

Nintendo 64 - Goldeneye... duh... (I realise i may in fact love goldeneye more then the normal person, i realised this after i burnt out my 2nd cartridge)

SNES- This should have been a hands down no contest right here... ok chrono trigger was damn good... OH SO MANY GOOD GAMES for this damn console! However... Super metroid, you just cant beat it... cant...

Oh and Tequila... I really cant think of how the 2nd RE was better then THE FIRST.

Sorry, the first just seem so PURE and RAW survival horror. My first game with chris just totally kicked ****... walking into the mansion with 1 shotgun shell and about 2 magazines for my pistol to only find all the zombies i killed have turned into the meanest mother F*$&ers the world has ever seen. Run chris... run!

You're talking about the RE1 Remake on GameCube, which you're quite right is better than RE2. However, the category was for PlayStation games, in which RE2 beats the original RE1.

Bit of a Nintendo Fan-boy here, but I have owned another few consoles

Gamecube - Eternal Darkness: Sanitys Requiem
Tough choice I love Smash Brothers and Resident Evil but I had the most fun with this one.

    Nintendo 64 - Perfect Dark
Good memories of thrashing the rest of my street at this one. I always thought it was better than Goldeneye

    GameBoy Advance - Advance Wars
Pretty original game, makes journeys bearable

    GameBoy - Pokemon

    Super Nintendo - Mario Kart

    DOS/Windows - Half Life

    PlayStation2 - EyeToy Play
