Menu & Console Text Invisible :s

<div class="IPBDescription">For any Steam Half-Life Game</div> Hey Everyone!,

Well lately I've been having a problem with any Steam Half-Life game.

For some reason whenever I open up the any Half-Life game via steam, the splash screen loads up with the background, but for some reason I can only see a few random characters in place of the menu, and all the other text for the menu is gone! This problem is also occuring in the console, although I can see text messages perfectly fine on the game screen. The rest of the game seems to be running fine except for this.

Now I have changed my config file lately, and I have used powerstrip, but I tried to reverse any of the changes, but those two things may not be responsible for it at all. I am running the default steam menu, although for some reason it never saves any connection speed I set, and reverts always to DSL instead of LAN.

I've gone so far as to uninstall steam completely, and then just installing half-life. For some reason if I run half-life without steam everything works perfectly, but when I install steam I run into the same problem again. And when I ran Half-Life without Steam, I have opengl set as default, so I'm assuming steam is using opengl also.

BTW I'm using Windows XP Home Edition on a Laptop, but that shouldn't matter since my problem occured a few or so after I started playing NS with Steam. And I've also tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the same graphics drivers.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Evolution{FU}

    Try using the default(green thing) steam skin. Some MODs, especially DOD have problems with dissapearing text when other steam skins are used.

    Try deleting/renaming "ClientRegistry.blob". An amazing amount of problems can be fixed by just removing it and letting steam rebuild it.

    Wooohoo, I managed to fix it while still being able to use OpenGL <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> The problem was that I had Force S3TC/FXT1 Texture Compression On under my video driver settings, and that alone was responsible for the screwed up menu graphics <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The reason I enabled it originally was to increase performance, but what's the point if it just made things unstable and corrupt :lol:

    Oh, well. Thanks for trying Soylent green <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->,
