Learning New Maps

The 3.0 maps..
Ok, so the 3.0 beta has been out for quite a while, and there are 3 new ns_ maps: agora, ayumi and metal. My problem is that i learn maps extremly slow, and if you don't know the map as a skulk, you are pretty much screwed. -_-

Has anyone got any tips that works for them when it comes to learning new maps?

Use the in-game minimap. If you have to, extract the sprites and print them.

    ^^

    thats exactly what to do

also you can always get a game going with some buddies and learn the maps together... I would say fire up a LAN game and run around the maps until you know them but I'm not sure if you can LAN with steam without undue problems

If you wanna lan you dont need to use steam jus copy the entire nsp folder from steam to whereever you have the actual game of halflife installed and it works perfectly.

many people that have switched over to steam got rid of their halflife install.
I forget, but there are settings in the server.cfg to get a lan game goin.

I still get lost in ns_lost , no joke. I've been known to run in circles around paranoia and (the room with the res node surrounded by the pit).

A while back somebody did some cool minimap replacements. They had the names of locations right on the graphic so you could instantly see where someone was and have a location to give. Maybe someone could do that again for the new maps/new versions.

I don't learn them very quickly either, I start off by running round and navigating by the minimap. Just play them as often as I can. I've got the hang of metal now and I've got the general gist of the others. Just keep playing, you'll get it eventually.

You can but the problem is (as seen in another thread) right now, steam has zero support for LAN games. In fact, it won't even start up without an internet connection (as it feels the need to download updates overrides LANin'. Soon though, you will be able to do that.

I've got metal and ayumi down so so... but agora has to be the most complex and worst layout I've seen in a while. It's been removed from a lot of servers, and I doubt it'll be in league play, so I haven't bothered.

A thread made by me which contains urls to both custom mini map packs.

I did not make either of the two, just providing links to them in one thread.

It contains a screenie so you can see what it looks like

What I do to learn maps quickly is go a skulk and find the routes from hive to hive (the minimap makes this easy). After that I join a server that is playing the map and build up from there. And I have to agree, Agora is very complex but I *almost* know it now. I know all the other maps except Metal and Ayumi like the back of my hand.

Yup, agora is pretty hard to learn... especially the middle area, i still usually take accidentally some sort of detour :/

metal and ayumi i know pretty well by heart. well, almost at least. ayumi is harder.

all the other maps i can draw on a paper with my eyes shut. (no i'm not gonna prove that )

That's wierd, because agore is one of the maps that don't take so long to learn.

I find that "noclipping" around the map helps.

    (sv_cheats 1
    developer 1
    map "map_name"
    noclip)

Must be done in that order on steam, with or without other console commands in between.

For use when not in-game these might be helpful. No clue how long my bandwidth will hold up, I'm hoping to get them on ReadyRoom.org (if you are reading this Comprox **HINT**HINT**) at some point.
