Have I Missed Something?

Now, granted, this may not be the place for this question, if not then mods please remove or delete(And no i'm not being sarcastic, honest question.).

Typically, I have approximately 250-350 ping just sitting around in a server. When MGs start firing, you can safely dump 50-100 onto it, or double it if its a pair of HMGs.

My question is, if you're on broadband, and i'm on my string of salamis to the ISP, since WHEN do I have the advantage? I've been outright kicked from one server, and had people complain endlessly on a few others, what's the deal? Is there some steambug that I don't know about, what?

Don't really know what you're asking. If it's sarcasm about how you are supposed to compete with such lag, hey I feel your pain having been dialup for about 4 years. Broadband changed everything for me. That being said, I still feel like Steam adds some to my ping over normal Halflife, but it hasn't been that bad as of late. Anything other than that, don't understand what you're tryin' to say. So I shrug.

That's not it. The typical complaint seems to be that they can't hit me "becuase you have lag"........or that "im used to lag, and they're not".....*facial tick* WHAAA?!?...Is there some hitbox bug relating to lag or WHAT?

Ive noticed that steam seems to randomly set your connection to a 14.4 kps modem. Change it in your steam settings.

Sounds like you've run afoul of the not so elusive "whiner", who blames losses on everything but himself.

I usually get 130-150 ping, now with steam i sometimes go down to 103 which is good for a computer in southamerica trying to connect to a server in the US.

HL net code includes lag compensation; essentially, it checks if your target was in your sights when you hit fire (regardless of where he *actually* was), in case you were lagging and not getting accurate data on his real position. It can lead to people getting killed after they've safely reached cover, since you actually popped 'em while they were still running across open ground.

It can be called cheap, but it's not, really. It's just leveling the playing field between modem and broadband users. As always, when you encounter a server full of whiny idiots, go look for a better one. Sadly, Flayra (for NS) and the guys at Valve (for general HL) can only fix the game, not the idiots who sometimes play it.

I personally think Steam is better then normal HL, my ping is a rough 150-210 it depends largely on the amount of people on the server and where the server is located.

Please note im on 56k and yes it can be a pain but i live with it.

If your on BB your ping should be anywhere from 30-50 for ADSL to 120 for ISDN.

If your ping is as high as you say it is id look into your steam setup, make sure you have turned all steams auto-updates off (even if it is not updating it still checks, using bandwidth) this can be done by right clicking on the games in the games menu.

Id also look into other options such as custom rate settings.

Its a little script made by seraph, its primary use is for 56ks but ive heard that it does wonders for BB people aswell.

If your still having problems id look into other options such as a better modem/isp if your like me and BB is not easy to come by i guess your stuck with it <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

well that really depends coil.... if we're just looking at the ping..... its playable.... but we have to take packetloss into consideration.....

i've seen a lerk fly around maintanence hive in eclipse with 300 ping and lets just say he can be in the air for 1 second and in a vent the next second....

needless to say.... it was impossible to hit him with him teleporting around the map

so to the original poster..... i believe u need to enable net graph and check if you're having major packet loss....if you are.... then you can't blame others for getting mad at you teleporting

I've noticed that on some servers with steam people with high ping actully disappear and then reappear alittle ways away from where they were to all the people with low ping. We had one sulk that kept randomly disappearing and reappearing, even the other sulks mentioned it. Some people thought it was a hack, but i've only seen it with people over 250+ ping. Either way that might be the reason you got kicked.

No when people say they can't hit you it's because you warp around. One second you are in a doorway, and the next second you are at my feet. It's really rather annoying, but most people understand theres nothing you can really do about it, short of paying for broadband. I don't know how many times I've been killed because a skulk/marine is across the room, only to be right on me less than a second later.

I usually get 250-300 pings on US servers and I cans till do fairly well but when theres a lot of flak in the air I struggle getting my new graphics card and new processor etc. Helped out A LOT but still I can compete but some days the ping gods are vengful.
