Software rendering
Hey all,

I've updated the official NS FAQ. Not too many changes, but mostly updated to fit NS in it's current incarnation.

The biggest change is that we won't be able to support software rendering for version 1.0. This will be fixed in a future version, but we need to work with VALVe to get this fixed.

I'm a bit sad about this, as I really wanted to support it at the gate. It's a tradeoff though. We can delay NS and coordinate with the next HL patch, or we can not support it for v1.0. In the end, there are many more people with accelerators that want to play, so we decided to ship earlier.

For those that were banking on playing in software, maybe we can help. There are a lot of accelerators that are very cheap now, and you can probably just buy one and install it easily, for as little as around $20. MonsieurEvil has found some good links for you, and I hope this won't stop you from enjoying NS very soon.

Sorry again for the mixup, it's all part of the wild ride that is game development.

I don't think a lot of people will complain, Flayra. I think 99% of the people have a 3D accelerator.

No. A friend of mine has a GF4 ti4400 and another friend has a GF4 ti4600. And they both smoke the GeForce 3.

The card I think you mean is a GeForce 4 MX. The MX is the cheap version of the GF4, but it is so bad that it is a GeForce 2 MX clocked to GeForce 3 speeds.

I believe that the Windows 2000 certified drivers will work under XP. If not, check this link out:

I think that the real problem will be the newbies that run under software mode anyways, despite having a 3d accelerator. They'll download NS, try to run it in software, have it not work and be 'ogmz this mod sux cos i kant run itlolol'. Maybe setting opengl or d3d as a default would help.

as the ns team makes an agreement with cnet for a portion of the profits for all the stranded with software mode *snicker*

Yes and no, the Geforce 4 Ti(power) series is nvidias strongest line of vid cards out right now. While nvidias other gf4 line, the MX(value) has been tested to run at less than dandy power. A gf2GTS has more uber raw power for games. So if you have a choice between gf4MX and gf2GTS, definitely go for the gf2.

Nvidia is also fading out the gf3 series

ps. i saw that other post i just wanted to make it clearer

I'm sorry but if you can't muster enough cash to get at least a voodoo 1 I don't know how you can afford to be on the internet, I mean 3d accelerators have been out for what 8 years?

Maybe Flay could code it so that it what mode your in and tells you about the disadvantages in software if it see you using it.

    (overclocked) GeForce 4 Ti 4200 64mb

I know there´s not really anything to brag about but I still have nightmares of the time when I used to have a Geforce 2 MX/MX 400. *shudders*

Well I had a Geforce2 MX 32meg but I burnt it out somehow. The replacement I got was a 64meg Geforce2 Ti which I'm currently using and am very happy with it. There really isnt anything I can't run with it. The newest of the new games I might have to turn down to 800x600 from my usual 1024x768 but other than that, I'm running a lot of stuff with an old card.

Not too long ago a local hardware store had Geforce3 Ti500's on sale for like $150 (Canadian! ). If only I had the money at the time, that is such a steal. They're really phasing out those Geforce3's which sucks, but if you can find one cheap, I'd really recommend one. I'd estimate that that Ti500 that I couldn't afford would be better than a much more pricy GF4 4200, or at least comparable.

Edit: Yes I've heard good things about the ATI 8500 series and I'm sure they're cheap, but I'm more of a NVIDIA fan with their fantastic drivers and track record, although I should support the Canadian company...

Isnt that a GOOD THING? If people are too stupid to know theyve got a 3D accelerator, I DONT WANT EM TO PLAY.
I think software should be gotten completely rid off. if 99.9% of CS n00bs use software, good bye to them.

If you're going to use Pricewatch, pair it with resellerratings.com to avoid getting burned by shady retailers.

I sound like a commercial, but gagh. It really is a nice site to have around.
