Why The Onos Is Weaker

is it because...
the stomp time was cut in half? i remember playing on ns lost and you could survive a long time because you could stomp marines for a good amount of time before having to run away. i noticed now that i only use stomp to devour. in 2.x i was always regen adren onos but now in 3.0 i'm regen celerity.

think thats the main reason why?

It's because the hitboxes was fixed. If you hit the onos now, you hit it. Before it had the hitbox of a fade (which made me use the Fadenos/Hellnos, because that one used it's correct hitboxes).

The stun was made into a co-operative skill, as opposed to the solo skill it was before.
I often find myself stomping repeatedly while my mates finish the marines off.

It was 2 seconds, was cut in half. I agreed with it at first (Two seconds in NS is an eternity.), but after lengthy play, I think it should be considered bumping it up to at least one and a half seconds.

That's the most noticeable difference right there. There's a big difference between shooting at the broad side of a barn vs. shooting at a man-sized box pointed roughly in the center of said barn.

Onos are siege weapons. You use them in the endgame when even Fades aren't enough to crush the marines. Stomp is the best cooperative skill in the game, since you can kill marines just by keeping them from moving anywhere long enough for your teammates to kill them. Good fade > Good ono

But as stomp doesn't go up ramps, its useless in some circumstances.
• sushibugsushibug Join Date: 2003-01-26 Member: 12788Members
i know of the fixed hitboxes but the hparmor upgrades evened it out. it seems balanced to me. as for the fades > onos... when marines have a two hive lockdown onos are better at taking out the PG.. granted there is no one guarding.

back in 2.x i could clear out hives as a fade pretty well.. since 3.x i've only been successful once.

as for the stomp being cooperative... i beg to differ. usually i will be put in situations where i will tell my teammates to kill them while they're stunned. probably is not all of them will always get stunned when there are several. sometimes there will be one or two guys left and i'll be close to dying but i put faith in my teammates to kill them while stunned.. and i have been let down a many times. when i get wise and make my escape i end up getting block by teammates unintentionally. if i leave the scene early to not risk close-calls i get flamed for not being more productive.

nowadays i stun once, horn as much as possible, and run. repeat as necessary.

I really preferred old onos, but meh the new one is usable too as long as you can compose yourself ... stomp time makes a very big difference though, now a marine gets loose after 2 gores, and before you could smash him to death after one stomp. meh meh

u kidding me? onos is almost perfectly balanced, my specialty is devour in NS so im onos 95% of the time i play a game of NS, and even when im a marine vsing a skilled onos, they eventually go down, but they dont go down fast aso its worth a fight. 1 onos can easily take out 3-4 marines without dying. and if u do well then, u need some practice.

Onoses are in many cases weaker than before, but they're also much more reliant on Umbra. Umbra absorbs a ludicrous amount of damage now, and it's basically required to pull off a frontal assault against defending marines. It's hard to get good Umbraing on a pub server but I rarely see people even try.

Uh. Try to use your brain for a second here. It depends on the situation. Low hallway, 3 jetpackers, onos, onos wins because its gore has a pretty decent range (not as long as in 2.0, but still decent). Same 3 jetpackers in say... viaduct, and fades have the advantage. Both have their uses.

I thought umbra was nerfed to stopping 2/3 bullets from 5/6 or whatever it was before? How is this a nerf?
• BOBDololBOBDolol Join Date: 2003-10-04 Member: 21431Members
There was a bug in 2.0 where umbra will only block 30% of the bullets. In 3.0 the bug was fixed and now it blocks 70%

Make onos hp 4x the amount of the 2.0 hp. the onos looks four times bigger.

Yep, the onos is a big sign running around that says shoot here, with the biggest bullseye you've ever seen.

i agree that stomp needs to go up ramps and maybe stairs too. it's a shockwave that travels along the ground, not through it. maybe one of the devs can let us know whether its on the list of bugs that need fixing

Increasing Onos' HP isnt the answer. I would prefer to have 75% damge from all weapons, or something similar, rather then having to wait 10 minutes to regen my health.

Good point, seems that no-one had though of this. I can see it now, base rushing and getting your **** pummelled by HMG then running to your nearest hive and standing around for a few minutes while they research HA. GG.
• raz0rraz0r Join Date: 2003-07-24 Member: 18395Members
if you are in a hive, the onos is absolutely frickin amazin with regen and devouring someone + uber hive regen, onos regenerates at 80 or so hitpoints in one go from regen, that doesnt take long to fully regenerate

i never liked stomp, i only use it when there are like 5 HA/HMG there and i just let the skulks rip em apart, if there are no skulks, i run for the hills while stomping, other that that, run in, devour, run out, i used to be able to eat anyone in 2.01, but the range was nerfed, you could eat people from 10 metres away, ah, those were the days......

While it looks easy, it isn't as easy as coding it in

As for Onos being weaker....well, let's say that the big hitboxes allows HMGs to hit it from far away distances

And of course, 75% taken from weapons isn't going to help too. The most simple way to help beef the Onos was to increase the HP/AP count, and I have to say it's pretty darn effective for such a simple solution.

But of course, the downfall was that they lowered stomp duration, but that will hardly be a nerf to somoene who has practised their devouring

Yep. Many have not yet realize how much umbra is critical to crak marines.

Specially in CO, you can see an Onos being washed up in 2-3 seconds, now watch him rape the CC under umbra cover. Add a scream or two and GG.

Since the Onos has a fixed hitbox, he just become's a meat bag because all the marine's always focus all their firepower on the Onos before any other alien.

How wont it?

Increasing it's HP will only allow it to take more damage, but cause other abilities (namley defence) to be thrown out fo wack. Yet, with damage modifiers, it does the exact same thing, without affecting anything else. It worked great for turrets and oc's on Onos and HA respectivly..

... so to let any other aliens to go behind them and have a good meal...

I never take onos because of my lag and my lack of devouring practice... so i take fade for not being hit, but it is the same... i can't hit any marines... but the others, when i'm marine, yes... (lol)

If we give the onos an "unlimited high range" and we only test if those marines in the stomp range are on the ground, maybe it will do it, no ?

... bref... I love those smileys...
