Ns Sprite & Model Exploits!

<div class="IPBDescription">They need to be standardized</div> In getting some help from my last post on crosshairs, I realized just how easy "customization" can turn into "exploitation".
I.E. I was able to greatly improve my aim and trackabillity just by simply switching the muzzleflash sprite with the weld sprite (similar to turning r_drawviewmodel 0 in 1.x). Seeming as r_drawviewmodel was disabled to prevent exploitation, it seems only logical that NS sprites and models should be stored server side and made global and standard. And after checking my CS and DoD folder realized that thats exactly what the big mods have been doing! Currently its too easy to abuse customization ultimately nullifying some of the game's most critical balancing features (i.e. muzzleflash & skulk's obscuring teeth).
Does anyone else use customized models and sprites for asthetic or exploitive purposes? Your thoughts?

Actually this problem is allready fixed and has been since 2.0 the server can choose to enforce standard models only, for clan matchs this is always turned on but for public games its left off so people can use thier only models.

I use many custom models/sprites. But I don't use them for cheating or exploiting. I even sized down my custom skulk model so its not as big/see-able.

I think this would be particularly unfair to have it forced, as many people make models, sprites, or sounds for positive reasons, and the community would be deprived of their talent, which all just went down the drain.

[edit] Just to add my extra 2 cents, I use custom sounds only. It makes what I'm firing seem much more powerful--for instance, the deagle sound of CS for the pistol, M4a1 for the LMG, etc.

But how fair is it when, as a skulk, you purposefully move to your left when charging a marine, knowing this is where his muzzleflash will camaflouge you, and you still get owned just the same because said marine is using a null sprite so thus sees you perfectly clear?

You can also turn up your gamma to max, use powerstrip, replace all ambiance sounds with blank .wav and .mp3s, use bright models, use null sprites for muzzle flashes, and a lot of other things to give you an advantage. There are to many factors to take into account (including the fact it's their PC, and they can do whatever they want wit ith) to ensure everyone is playing the same game.

The only sprite I changed was when you're getting digested by an onos (I got sick of looking at the..organs)

Will this still effect wether or not I can play in clan matches? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

so that's how there are ppl with like 32-2 scores...

i think that models should all be blocked and not only that, i think that there should be a fixed value for brightness and gamma.

I think people need to stop whining about it.

Sure, cheaters can ruin everyones fun. Cheating is bad. But cmon... its already practically impossible to script. Im not saying if thats a good thing or a bad thing.

Custom models, skins, etc are like art. Just because they can be exploited for nefarious purposes doesnt mean we should completely restrict them. Model consistency is enough.

I believe it should be up to the server admins. If they care that much that people will be using bright models and the like, then they are welcome to ban it.

Oh please. You think this is how people go 32-2?? Whatever lets you sleep at night I guess.

Honestly though, custom models do ziltch to enhance skill, they merely facilitate it. A crappy player will not improve with custom models, rather, he'll live up to his full potential as a crappy player. Perhaps he will squeeze one or two kills a game out of the deal. In the end, he's still horrid.

It seems you folks are complaining about the good players using custom models. You forget however, that such players are going to own you left and right no matter what. Script and model limitations are futile attempts to dance around the issue; that being a huge skill gap. You think removing scripts and custom models will even the playing ground? No, it just makes the game less fun. When all is said and done, you will still be owned.

This exploit is as old as customization itself; there are dozens of ways to exploit the feature of customizability. NS includes an option to disallow custom models; that's the best that's going to happen. Other than that, there's nothing that can be done - and nothing that *should* be done - and it's really pointless to fuss about it.
