<div class="IPBDescription">Xbox SystemLink</div> I was recently looking fo the <a href='http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/hardware/systemlinkcable.htm' target='_blank'>Xbox SystemLink Cable</a> and found it on the xbox website for £19.99 (about $12 US). But then I came across <a href='http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product%5Fcode=50021790&pfp=CAT3' target='_blank'>these</a> (CAT-5E) cables which is the same exact thing as the SystemLink cable, except the CAT-5 cable cost only about $6.00. Whats up with that?!

Oh yeah, by the way, its my brithday. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    happy birthday, nice sig, and Cat-5 cables are pretty dang common, so it doesn't supprise me that they're cheaper. the system link cable probably comes with a 6$ idiot guide or something. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    First off, your figures are screwy. It'd be more $US, not less. But anyway...

    I checked the US side of things, just to be sure, and guess what? <a href='http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/xboxsystemlinkcable.htm' target='_blank'>$19.99</a> for the cable. Anyone else find that odd?

    Or you could go to home depot, buy the cable and the little attachment thingies for about a buck, and make it yourself.

    Um, this is a surprise to you? You've never seen the generic controllers for sale about $15 or $20 less then the real deal?

    I bought the XBOX lan party kit and it comes with a hub and 4 cables...it was only 39.99! I thought it was a great price, considering I use it for my xbox lan parties and computer lan parties <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    The cable is probably not just a cat 5 but crossed wiring (as I suppose it's a direct link)

    It's a crossover cable. I make them all the time... just on one end instead of splitting the blue pair around the green pair, split the orange pair.
    What you want is Cat5 (or Cat5e, Cat6, etc) cable, and a pair of RJ45 caps and a crimper. That or hit Fry's, buy a crossover cable for $3-7, and be happy.

    Heck, I could make these things out of scraps from work, sell 'em for $10 a pop, and be in business! Of course, I'd have to deal with idiots. Ah well.

    Can you use a normal ethernet type cord to connect two xbox's? Or do you have to buy this?

    I am asuming that the XBox HAS the nic in it, all you need is a piece of crossover.

    Yep, cables can be ridiculously expensive. I saw USB cables for (I think) £17 yesterday, which was doubly impressive because they were opposite USB optical mice for a bit over £20, and presumably the mice come with their own lengths of USB cable...
