I am new to NS and have downloaded everything, however, each time I enter a server, I get disconnected with a message saying that my Dll client (I think that's what it's called) differs from the servers.

If you are up to date then you're probably trying to connect to a 2.01 server.
<b>Edit</b>: Or, if you're using WON, make sure you aren't trying to connect to a 1.04 server.
Lord help me...are you talking about "this" particular site? See? Let's blame this on my age and being a grandmom and all....

Ok, here is the deal:
Download page is off of the ns.org website (just remove everything starting with forums from the address bar and thats the main page)
From there you can get a good step by step instalation guide, but here are the basics:
If you want to play NS 3.0 Beta (this is the newest public release, and I think is the best atm):
1) Download and Install Steam.
2) Play Hlaf Life through Steam once (just boot up the Training mission through steam, you have to do this for it to work properly)
3) Download and install NS 3.0 Beta 1 (there is a large list of links on the download pagE)
4) Download and install NS 3.0 Beta 3 (again links on download page) Make sure you point the installer at:
....\steam\steamApps\yourEmail\Half-Life\
5) Find a 3.0 server and start fragging <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If you have any problems with ayn steps just tell us exactly what is not working (give error msgs and such)
Yes.....I "REALLY" am a GRANNY - Have 6 grandkids....Don't know why anyone would lie about that...I'll also check out that other thread you were talking about.
If you have any doubts about me being a GRANNY - I can start telling you names, and ages...then will start talking about each kid...then you will beg me to stop. Once I find the other thread, I'll try to post something there.

I've gotten a bit confused on what to download with the NS I copied the one post that said to dl NS3.0 Beta 1 and also NS3.0 Beta 3 <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->?

I've been playing HL for a few years, so I went through the painful thingy of downloading STEAM...I've got all of that and play Half Life, like every day.
and
somewhere I musta dl the NS, but according to the posts here, I must not have the current version, so that must be my problem.
Should I "un-install" the NS version I have first, then dl the 2 beta ones?
Trust me, I won't do something I am not totally sure of, because I've gotten myself in trouble in the past, so until I understand, I won't do anything.

client.dll errors means that your client is a different version then the server.
If you wana play the latest version all you have to do is download beta 1 and run it (it will auto install itself into steam\steamApps\yourEmail\half-Life\nsp)
Now you download and install Beta 3 and when the installer asks for a path you give it steam\steamApps\yourEmail\half-Life.
Basicaly you install the patch like you would install any normal HL mod under won (point it at your HL dir and it will put itself in the proper sub dir)....
alot of the dowloads seem to be dead, but if you just poke around (or fall back on using fileplanet...) you will find the right installers <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Anyhow, spent all day downloading the beta 1 & 3, went to game, no go, then dl the patches and still no go, same client.dll error
I don't have a clue what to do now, and I paid $80 bucks to join file planet so I could get the dl faster.
I can tell you I went into STEAM, and CREATED a game in their choices there, and could get into a map that was natural selection...Don't know if that information helps you help me....
Of course I was the ONLY player there....
Let me know. I'm whooped and gonna go rest for awhile.

Ok, lets see...
What it comes down to now is tests..
1) Make sure you have a folder at steam\steamapps\youremail\hlaf-life\nsp
2) Were you prompted to install xfire with the beta 3 patch? If not then sometihng is worng ans you should have been.... Make sure the file was ns_v30_b3_patch.exe.
3) Make sure that there is an exe called xfire_installer in that folder, if not then the installer some how looked in the wrong place....
4) Look around all the dirs below Half-Life to see if there are any other folders called nsp, half-life or anytihng odd like that...
5) On an off chance:
If you are not the only person who has a steam account set up on your computer (aka there are a few emails in steam\steamApps\) the install might have pointed itself around incorrectly, if this is the case I think I should be able to wlak you through fixing that...

I did a search for the xfire_installer and PC came up with ziltch. So, I'm figuring this is my problem? I do see a ns_v30_b3_patch_dedicated, v3_b2_patch andv3_b1 in the half-life folder, however they are not folders but icons, (like install icons?)
Getting confused here as what to do. Should I do a total un-install of all natural selection items and start over? Please oh please do not tell me to un-install Steam and Half Life, as this bird is getting too old to handle this, and will really seriously consider taking up KNITTING fer sure.

The ns_v30_b3_patch_dedicated is for running a dedicated server.
You want just plain old: ns_v30_b3_patch.exe

I'm currently having a problem with my NS crashing frequently and working on solving that problem too but having a hard time (sometimes NS likes to be stupid!)
[EDIT] - Its usually a good idea to Uninstall Half-life and NS completely(maybe steam sometimes too), reupdate them and that will probably fix your problems
P.S. You payed $80 for File Planet?! Are you on 56k?
Didn't I tell you I can get myself in a heap of trouble if not given explicit instructions? Yeah, I do that well.

Kaiser.....Nope ...no 56k here. I use a cable modem. And yep, I was getting desperate to get things working and didn't want to wait for the hours waits for the downloads, so I bought the tip top of the line thingy from there to join.
Yeah...so we won't be having desserts for about 6 months here, so I can replenish my goody pot, but hey, I tried really hard to do this right.

I've gone thru and installed all the versions....and low and behold there was the x-fire thingy. Now, I went ahead and installed that but it went into my PROGRAM FILES folder. That is where it is now. I was afraid to move it.
So, I've tried 6 servers and either it's a client.dll or a map dll/difference issue, and still cannot access any servers.
Now what?
Am I gonna have to bake and send you all cookies for this help?

so you have run:
ns_install_v3_b1.exe
then you ran:
ns_v30_b3_patch.exe
And when you checked you have the xfire installer in your steam\steamapps\email\half-life\nsp folder? (this is to simply make sure that beta 3 installed to the proper dir)
and then via steam you tried to join a server? (make sure the game is a beta 3 game by expanding the game coloumn)
this is just very wierd...
I am honestly running out of ideas atm, the only thing I can possibly think of doing is trying again from the start... (this would only require reinstalling, I am nearly positive your files are proper now)
The steps involved would be:
1) remove the nsp folder form steam\steamapps\email\half-life
2) Run ns_install_v3_b1.exe
3) Make sure that steam\steamapps\email\half-life\nsp now exists
4) Run ns_v30_b3_patch.exe (make sure you are prompted to install xfire, but don't as you have it installed already)
5) make sure that the xfire installer is in the steam\steamapps\email\half-life\nsp folder. (again, you don't have to run it)
6) go to the games window of Steam and double click on "Natural Selection (Beta)"
7) In the server window make sure that you join a game with the label of "Natural Selection v3.0 beta 3"

Perhaps if you wrote down the steps you take during your install we can see the error. It would be truely sad to lose a player because they couldn't install the game.
by reading the last 3 pages it is so much pleasure to see people help each other - that's why i am playing this mod - because people are different than in other mods.....

I'm afraid I can't give you the steps I took during the downloading and installation of NS...Why? Cuz I pushed so many buttons, and did so many things, this poor old brain can't remember...I do remember what I had for breakfast this morning. I think that's a good thing....

I am guessing there is no known fix patch or something for this problem.
Is it possible to get this error while haveing the right dlls/map files?
and say if someone who wasn't having problems ziped their working files up, and submitted it, would there be compatiblity issues with using their files?

you can expand the game coloumn so you can see the full name, make sure it beta 3
oh, and 'some maps' isn't descriptive, we need to know wich maps.
