Just a suggestion for the name; I think co_thetis would be better. Thetis was also a Greek god, mother of Achilles, and she also lived under the sea with her nymphs. I suppose it's too late to suggest that now though. Oh well.

Looking very good by the way. Love that clean look.

Falling into the shaft of the elevator next to the command chair as a marine is a Bad Thing ™ since there isn't a ladder or switch to raise the elevator -- you need to wait for assistance. There were also two small HOM (null textured?) squares visible on the underside of two vertical beams visible from on top of the lowered elevator.

If a marine is running along the stairs to the upper deck overlooking the Observation Lab hive (see attached pic), it's possible to get jammed between the wall and the stairs -- when this happens, the player can't move up or sideways, can't jump, and has to move very slowly down the staircase to free themselves. Easily fixed by extending the reach of the stairs with some clip brushes, but it's potentially annoying to have that happen during combat. To reproduce, get halfway up those stairs as a marine, run off them perpendicularly into the wall, and then try to run up/jump/move sideways.

Why did you "trademark" bad thing Cagey?

Or rather why is there that special TM Character next to the phrase "Bad Thing"?

Love the look, it is very "marine". Also, the architecture (sp?) and lighting is awesome. Just loaded the map and went for a stroll and this is what I got to say:

O M G

I hate you, Yamazaki.

That is the most bwuudif00l map I have ever seen...

Oh, I did get a drop in fps (59 to 29) in the hive, but only when viewing the room, not under the crawlspace...

Meh... I will un-install Hammer now.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys!

Planned changes for 1.1

- A few bug fixes
- Hive fog thinned out and made into a High Detail only option
- Steam in maintenance area thinned out and made into a High Detail only option
- Random ambient sounds throughout the level
- Access Junction now has a ramp that leads to the top floor of Specimen Retrieval, so that the small elevator is not the only route through there
- Top hallway of Specimen Retrieval now has crawlspaces
- Elevator in Marine service dock now has a cagedoor to prevent falling in
- Detail Textures to be added (use r_detailtextures 1 to enable)

I'll post a download link later today or tomorrow when it's ready.

I just figured out why I can't hear any of the ambient sounds. The directory that you kept your sounds in was named incorrectly. After moving them from /nsp/Sounds to /nsp/sound it worked! (And made a WORLD or difference I might add!) Might want to fix that for the next version!

In regard to my framerate, 30 is simply not my max. It's my average with vsync on. With it off, I average 50, but I still drop to about 10 in that hive. My point being, it causes a fairly noticeable drop. And I'm not going to turn off high detail for only one map. I hope your changes you have planned do the trick! (I'd really like to play this map against people on servers!)

I play NS with my monitor darkened according to the "gamma tuner" that came with NS.

Edit: Another thing I noticed, the sparking noise you can hear in "Specimen Retrievel" you can hear about halfway across the map. It'd be nice if you could lower the range of that sound by about half.

Edit again: In regards to your computer noises, I think it would be nice if there was a bit more variety in the sounds. Sometimes sound can define the room, and it'd be nice if every computer didn't sound the same. Just a small suggestion.

That'd be another bug fix for 1.1, correcting the sound folder. Thanks for catching that.

The sparking sound is part of the env_spark entity, and I can't change its radius. Only solution is to remove it and replace it with some sort of particle system and ambient sound combination.

1.1 will be coming out sometime tomorrow or monday, at the moment I have major graphic problems with my machine that just won't go away. I'll be reinstalling Windows XP and getting it back up and running this weekend.

i just thought to myself how wicked awesome it would be if bump-mapping were used with these textures, seeing as they almost all are supposed to simulate raised surfaces.

we playtested it on our server. man! never ever saw a server fill like that rate on a custom map!!!

negativ:
- there are some nearlycomplete dark areas. thats just too dark. make only a few dark spots where the players can actually see anything.
- the particle effect at the hive may be nice but its cruel for the framerate, you cant hit anything exept the hive
- hive room is too open
- the skybox is... it looks unfitting....

positiv:
- the "clean" style might look little old fashioned, personally I like it, so the map is playable. very good work. and I exspecially like cryo processing and the really cool marinestart!!!
- the layout is just perfect for cool action
- the map seems to be very balanced
- and last but not least it was hell of fun to play it!

just fix the little probs, the map itself is great, much more playable than other co_maps (even officials).

1. I was going to release 1.1 tonight, but I think I'll wait and work on the lighting a bit more.

2. Now that my Radeon 9600pro is fried, I had to resort to my GF2 MX as a back-up, and I can see how badly the hive fog affects framerate. Since most people don't know how to switch off High Detail particle systems I'll just remove it completely.

3. Easily fixed, I can add some clutter for cover.

4. I couldn't find any other skyboxes that were suitable for an underwater look.

Otherwise, I'm happy this map is such a hit

Nooo! You PS killer! It's too cool to die!

Anyway, the map is very nice and original, but I haven't actually played it with more than two players in a team, so I didn't get to see how it plays.
In my opinion, the hive area is nearly too clean, it could use a little smashing.

Referring to the screenshot Cagey posted earlier...
In Observation lab under the stairs shown in the picture seems there is a bug of some kind. When you search the dark area in hive room you will find a hole, maybe a leak of somekind. Just to mention this in case you haven't noticed it yet.

ps. it can't be seen in the picture

first off, freaking good map, it looks so good, and it fits perfectly with the research station idea, but, it is too dark in some places, not all, places like under the stairs etc should be dark, but maybe not so dark in (some) coridoors etc.

also, the hole under the stairs that drops in to the hive room (the one thats supposed to be there) maybe some sort of little light there, as the first time i dropped through it, I was like "WTH?!?!?" as i had no idea what had happend because it was so dark.

also as said above there is another hole near that one, that im sure shouldnt be there, but its in possibley the darkest corner of the whole map, and u will never probably see it anyway. but u might be a perfectionist.

also the mist/fps issue. hmm it looks soooooooooooooo damn good, but it does drop the fps, on mine from 50ish to about 30. nothing too serious but that wasnt in a game, would be differnet if the hive room is loaded up. but its your call.

overall, really good work.

add something after playing it a while:

negativ:
- there seem so be some invalid faces, exspecially at the elevator in the marinestart
- some dark spots are nice but think about lightning up some areas a little bit, this would also help to seethe webs better, now you just can guess because you CANT see them.
- the team_start for the marines are to "camp-able", replace them to prenvent permanent spawncamping
- people are too lazy to download the map from the serveer and rather quit

positiv:
- noone mentioned the "clean" style negativ
- all players like it
- the matches are unpredictable

personally I hate the combat mode because it teaches the new ns-players nothing, really nothing! but ths map seems to be the missing bridge from normal ns to combat.

I simply love this map! very good job! respect!

Awesome work man. So polished, smooth. The ps in the hive seems to be gone completely (I have high detail on)? Enough light now that you can go from the MS to the hive and stay in light, but enough dark that hiding spots are gonna be tonnes of fun... nice!
