I learnt to model using <a href='http://www.trfmod.com/milkshapetut/' target='_blank'>this for MS3D</a>

I know what you mean about some text tutorials being difficult. Some people are just hands on learners. While seeing someone do it may help, simply looking at pictures and reading text is sometimes frustrating, especially if a small step is left out.
I would suggest trying out the video tutorials, found here:
