Help the noobs to understand and learn the game and dont just switch server.

When you started playing ns or anyother game you where not the most 1337 player in the world. People probable thought the same about you as you think about the noobs now. I actually took a noob and for 30 minutes guiding him throught the game and now he passed it on to his friends. If everybody helps out there wont be any "noobs".

I must admit it is quite amusing when a noob joins and asks for 'a better weapon commader' in world chat not even team talk and for some reason every NSPlayer asks for a welder? Weird but anyhoo...

Holy crap I'm not the only one who noticed this. WTH?? Why are they asking for welders, most of them don't even do anything with them. Maybe they think they can repair their own armor with it? lol that would be hilarious.

Yeah, ive noticed a lot of nubs ask for welders too.

I bet its cause of teh purty lights.

C'mon guys... stop jabbing at the new guys simply by calling them "nubs". That really gives them not enough credit.

Instead, refer to them with the more appropriate title "Cannon Fodder."

In all seriousness guys, you will never really escape the proliferation of "nubs" as long as you play on public servers. On top of that, taking the position that playing with "nubs" is below you in some fashion really doesn't speak well for the community at large. If people don't like the community, they leave (or never come if they smell it from far away). If people leave, there becomes less incentive for developers to work with the game we all love. If there's less incentive, there are less updates and resolved issues. Eventually the proliferation of arrogant elitists becomes a lone population of arrogant elitists with no one to play with but themselves. Then when they feel tired of having nothing to complain about they leave to torment the next victim game. In the end it is these arrogant elitists that truly stifle imaginative innovation in games as nobody can really stay around long enough to notice without being thorougly disgusted by the crowd it has drawn.

So why don't we all play nice and just shut the hell up!!!

Maybe we're running on a different vocabulary:

Newbies - Responsible, new people to the game. They are willing to learn, and have a rough estimation of how the game plays. We need more of these, as always.

N00bs - One step lower on the social ladder. Their knowledge of NS is limited to marines shoot and aliens bite. Generally not annoying, they just suck and could care less about the team or how to play the game.

Nubs - People who dont have any idea how the game plays, could care less about the team, and bugs players. OMG this isnt like CS! OMG I NEED TEH BETTER GUNZ!?! etc etc.

Nublets - The lowest of the low. These hell infested demons crawl out from satans realm just to ruin everyone's day. Generally being a smacktard, escessive cursing and racial slurs are their trademark.

There are tons of new players due to this ns cs, but I think that was one of the main aims of the new game version. I personally don't mind helping out the new guys, as long as they want to learn and are not jumping into the comm chair thinking this is starcraft. I find helping the willingly ones out will weed out the cs players and will help build the ns community. If someone runs off tell them to pull back or kiss their **** goodbye, they will get the message quickly one way or another. If they do good, tell them it, we all know how it feels to have someone tell you "good job" after you help hold double alone against a 5-6 marines as a gorge. Simple fact is the cs players will get tired of combat and we will be left with those truely interested in true ns.

Also, I find whenever I use a welder I get an average of 12 fps. Does this mean all NSPlayer's have good pc's.? It's probably not locked because except for the "DIE NOOBS!!! I am an elitist and I was born with a Natural Selection manual in one fist and a thirteen-button optical mouse in the other!" posts, it's a legitimate discussion.

We like to think that the Natural Selection community is different and more newbie-friendly, but that's only partly true. It would seem that there is a slightly higher concentration of people who are willing to help, but I don't come across them on a regular basis.

To be honest, I'm disappointed with the community as a whole. It was great in 1.04 when most of the players were still learning and those who were experienced were willing to teach us, but now it's devolved into, "I hate newbies because they ruin the game," and, "OMG Flayra, add flamethrowers and a water alien!"

    [/soapbox]
    Shields up. Heavy bombardment imminent.

does the fact that when i first downloaded natural selection i read the manual instead of pestering people ingame endlessly make me an elitist? when i tell others to do the same, people always act insulted. i don't see why. if you're not going to take the time to learn, i'm not going to waste my time on you, and i doubt anyone else who is busy trying to play will either.

Personally I stopped reading manuals about 4 years ago. Most of the time the manual contains erroneous or outdated information that only leads me to confusion in the long run. That goes for any game whether commercial, mod, or indie. I opt for a quick run through the keyboard config menu to see what kinds of things are possible, and then after that if there is a question of how to do something I ask and get the answer in an ad hoc fashion.

Hell, maybe the NS team is damn exceptional at keeping thier manual up to date, but that still isn't going to get me to start something I habitually stopped years ago.

As to reading the manual making you an elitist snob... no. As long as you understand that a large number of people (possibly and very likely the majority) never touch manuals and take that into account when questions pop up then you're fine. But if you take that attitude of "Why the hell aren't you fulfilling MY expectations"... "Why the hell are you wasting MY time"... "Why the hell are you ruining MY experience"... "Why the hell are you not following MY orders"... etc. as if you are the sole possesor and lord of the game, its mechanics, and its players then I call you an arrogant elitist.

Obviously those remarks are somewhat on the extreme and very few people actually come out and litterally say those statements, it illustrates the mindset that many people have knowingly or not that generally deters both growth of this excellent mod and motivation for the new guys to actually learn something. If the only thing you ever have to say to someone is generally deroggatory or demeaning in any fashion that person generally could care less and won't follow any subsequent advice. Behavioral Science 101 people!!! See... now that I said that statement as if this was somehow common sense to any "enlightened and educated" person you are automatically less likely to heed anything I say from now on.

A community can be defined as being as intelligent as its smartest idiots, as accepting as its most compassionate snobs, and as kind as its most benevolent ****tards.

I say bring on all the new guys with open arms and kick all the snobs "too good to play with the new guys" in the nads...... twice.... three times if they talk back.

Reading the manual before playing the game doesn't make you an elitist. Expecting new players to do things exactly the way you did and then looking down on them because they don't know the game as well as you do makes you an elitist. Personally, I have trouble learning a game by reading the manual. I have to play the game in order to learn it.

On a side note, I think it's interesting that the same people who go "combat is too much like CS. I hate it." are the same people who leave the server when the mapcycle brings up a vanilla map.

    </agree Palin>

For myself, there are two kinds of newbies... Newbies, and stupid newbies (I dispise the terms "nub", "noob", "nubcake", etc. Sounds elitist and immature, and when I hear them ingame they're usually tossed around by people who sound like they should be in an AOL chat). A newbie doesn't know how to play the game, doesn't know a gorge from a movement chamber, and wonders how the heck you get to use the big guns and bigger aliens, but will at least take direction and advice when given, and will do his best to work with the team dispite not knowing where to go.

A stupid newbie, on the other hand, is the kind of "special" person who will reply with "omgz u SUYF" when you try and tell them where they should go, refuses to listen to anything the teammates tell them, and just act like a festering boil for whatever team they are on. Sadly, the stupid newbie seems to be the more common of the two. I try assist newbies whenever possible, and give them high praise when they listen and pay attention to their teammates. I wish more people would play like that.

I too, have noticed a fairly massive change across the servers I frequent. Especially in my clans server, when I started playing there, I started to get to know everyone, generally one person knew how another played, there was actual teamworkh4x (TEH OMGZ@!?@!!!!~!`11o1l1o`), but the past few weeks, the player quality has taken a *SHARP* turn for the worse. We have had quite a few more actual noobies in, mostly due to combat (IE: Hey, how do I get medpacks? Why can't I go lerk?) but, thankfully, most of those wise up fairly quickly, with our experienced, helpfull, attentive staff of regulars, and our newer, not so helpfull, gnat attention-span horde of smacktards just in from CS.

God, I can't wait for admin. Vengeance upon the peons.

On the whole i'd say there isn't as much a huge influx of newbies as there are flaming idiots attracted by Counter-Selection.
