Weapon of Noob Destruction.. NS Manual!?
I was just reading some posts about pubs and their over-population with newly 3.0 christened newbies itching to turn our beloved game into the horror that CS has become. Well it dawned on me that instead of shunning and banning these poor, misled gaming souls, why not show them the light? That, of course, being the new NS manual, its whereabouts still in question. Does any one know where this Weapon of Noob Destruction can be found??!!. Even if not just for the salvation of the nublets, but even for us 1.0 veterans it would be a good read!

--- If my blindness has caused me to miss some blatant link to it... i apologize,
--- But if there is yet no new manual, for you noobs, i sympathize.

Thanks Daxx for actually READING my post!
Jedi... that's what happens when you try to skim and summarize. I'll re-word it in more of a lay fashion for those who think I am out to get our next generation of NS players: I am doing just the OPPOSITE of that; I am, as Daxx observantly pointed out, trying to find a BETTER alternative to the situation than what i have been seeing on Pubs lately, namely the "what a Nub!"s and the "Kick the NUB"s. It's very discerning and I hope the new manual will put an end to that!
Like i posted... i ->sympathize<- with noobs, as we all should becuase we all have both "been there" and "done that".

*woops* due to my blindness once again, i forgot to thank Zek for his well-wicked searching skills! I dunno how you found it buddy, but you did!
The noobs of NS and the NS community owe you one.. and if you could spread the word we can rid the servers of noobicsm and blind rage! <--- possible mission statement?

Tutorials for NS have been mentioned several times before, tho none has really been made...

Frankly, NS needs a tutorial...badly...very badly...

Not everyone will try it out if one was to be implemented but enough would, and if the tutorial has some quality in it then most of the newbie problems will disappear.

A simple tutorial which goes through the marine and the khaara teams, shows the differences between the teams and game modes, and now and then emphasises that teamwork IS important would be more than enough to teach anyone what NS is really about.

Perhaps some simple obstacle course for each team; a long corridor which demonstrates what they can and can't do...for instance when teaching someone about how to build a rine resnode, once the player reaches the node, a script automatically drops a rt, and a text appears, explaining what the player is supposed to do...that kind of stuff...same thing with teaching about the CC, weapons and different buildings ect...

Then for the khaara team, pretty much the same...let the player evolve into all the life-forms and explain what each life form and attack does ect, then as a gorge, explain how to build and what each chamber does...

I just hope that it would be possible to make such a tutorial...I have no clue what the limits are in the HL engine, but it would be extremely great if it was possible, cause right now, it's an infestation of clue-less players out there, and what worse is, very few are willing to teach these new folks about NS...

You know, technically, noob bashing can be considered a violation of the first forum rule...

Here's the deal, people: Not all new players are ignorant selfish disgraces of the human race, in fact, the majority consists of nice enough people whom you wouldn't even recognize as newbies if it wasn't for their sometimes clumsy handling of certain game aspects.
What you are complaining about is a small, small minority, so do everyone around a favor and stop generalizing.

Look, Nemesis...it's true what you are saying, however, it's also true that not everyone who is experienced, is a "newbie basher"...

    Problem here is threefold:

    1. There aren't enough experienced players who are willing to help new players...

    2. Some new players come to NS with an attitude, which..well..degrates gameplay...
The reason for the attitude is usually cause they don't know about the game...eg. OMG, w@llh@x0r, ect...and from there, anything can happen...

    3. Most new players never visits the MB's...

Truth is that most folks are eager to install the game and throw themselves in the fray the second it's installed...even I usually do it...

However, actually learning the game is approached in many different ways...some read the manuals, and MB's, some ask ingame, and some just learn by themselves...

Thing is that there are so many of those that just throw themselves in the game, and this causes frustration on both parts...

That's how I see it anyway..

Its not because of the Manual, there are friendly noobs and, hmm lets call em "CS noobs", a friendly noob just plays the game and learns fast, i was one myself They play the game, watch everything and learn NaSe tactics and strategies.

Then theres the "CS noob", he shouts around, hops into the CC, builds Chambers he likes, kills Teammates if FF is enabled, and he thinks hes better then all the other players and calls everyone "noob"

Mr Friendly Noob reads the Manual and knows what to do, Mr "CS noob" sees the manual, maybe looks at it shortly and gives a ****

Unfortunately, you cant force Mr "CS noob" to read the Manual. But even MR friendly noob makes mistake at the beginning, no friendly noob knows how to play Fades or Onos, they have to learn, everyone does.

Belay further use of the word 'CSnoob', please, it's as full of predjudice as the previous description. Not everyone playing CS is a jerk (or so I hope - there's a damn lot of people playing CS).

What kind of fix are you expecting? Religions and philosophers have sought for ways of making people less ignorant and obnoxious for millenia by now - it's unlikely a gaming community will find the perfect solution.
Also, run a quick search on the word 'noob'. You'll notice that every occasion that brought a big insurge of new players resulted in lots and lots of people predicting that said newbies would ruin NS. So far, it seems we're still standing.
Have a little patience, search a few good servers, and wait. That's the only solution I can come up with.

Honestly, I don't know how much reading the manual before you start playing will really help. There is so much stuff that can only be learned by playing. There is some specific information in the manual, but the general idea of how to play isn't really explained in the manual (and can't be, very well), and that's most of what NS is. The best thing is probably to play a few games, then read (not skim) the manual, then play some more. It would be great if a tutorial was made, but until then we will just have to help new players adjust.

QUOTE

I completely agree - that's why I'm not threatening to ban all members

You should make a manual where evereybody has cooperated to it.

Put it in the next installer and give it a shortcut on the desktop.

For example we can have a sticky thread where people can make a list of do's and dont's based on their experiences with noobs. And weed out the most important ones.

Here's a solution that wouldn't be too harsh, but would force the newbies to at least learn a litttle bit:

When you first went to the NRA shooting range, to get a pass you need to pass a test. It's not hard at all, they give you a sheet with all the answers. What it makes you do however, is read the sheet.

A simple quiz like that would make sure everyone installing ns gets needed info. Experienced players wouldn't have any trouble doing it at all. Having a quiz would insure that everyone entering the game has at least a little knowledge of the game.

    Sample questions:

    What is this lifeform?

Simple but effective. If the so called "Newbie" made a cursory glance at the manual, the large image of the skulk would most likely catch their attention and they would see the name. Making sure they at least looked at the manual. However...

Flayra's intention was to widen the NS Community and increase growth, alienating and or limiting our influx of new players will not help achieve this. So as fun as this is to consider, its actual happening is doubtful.

It's also quite possible that a vast majority of people don’t really care that hardcore gamers on the other side of the world get their satisfaction. A lot of people play to amuse themselves and kill time, not to socialise with gamers and use teamwork. You may say 'well go bak 2 cs nub' but a lot of them are there, that’s why it has such a bad name. But some of them chose to play ns, as long as commander’s supply them with guns they will be happy. They don’t really care if their team wins or not, they just want their adrenaline fix.

P.S. Just because I made this comment does NOT mean I am one of them. I just think it's about time you saw the game from their perspective. No matter how many times they read the manual, they just seriously don’t give a damn about what you think.

Oh and this isn't general nub bashing, just certain nub bashing.
