Lag Issues Since Beta 3?

I have been experiencing some wierd lag issues on my server since putting beta 3 on, generally overall latency has been rising up around 200 or so for all players but lately we have been getting alot of lag spike looking problems but everyones latency will be around 70-100, then we also get wierd spikes that hit from player to player in turn going from one to the next. I have spoken to my server provider and he is convinced it is not his connection or hardware, and i know everyone on the server is not having internet problems all at the same time... The lag was a bit of an issue with beta 2 but much much more noticeable in beta 3. I have heard the same thing from others also. If anyone has any clue (not including the lame get a new server or bigger connection ideas) on what I can do or if this is a beta 3 prob please let me know..

Are you running anything else on the server - eg. metamod / adminmod, etc?

You aren't the only one - I am getting the same and running the following mods:
    Metamod
    Cheating Death
    Clanmod
    nsstatusbar
    autoassign
    AMX - auto_random.amx

Yeah a fair few plugins I know - I've was prevously running them all under NS 2.01 without issue although now many players are getting the lag spike mentioned above.

Also on many games around 20 mins into the game pings spike to 200-300 and stay there. CPU shows its running at around 86% so there is room to spare. After chatting to my hosting provider he says its not a bandwidth issue.

    The system is a P4 2.4GHz (512K lvl2 cache), 512Meg memory and on a network burstable to 100Mb/Sec.

    Launch options are:
    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->./hlds_run -game nsp +map ns_hera +maxplayers 21 -autoupdate -pingboost 1 +sys_t
    icrate 1000 +sv_maxupdaterate 60 +localinfo mm_gamedll dlls/ns_i386.so<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

If anyone has any thoughts then I'd appreciate hearing them.

    Regards

    Haven

haven, nsstatusbar is known to be a really nasty cpu drainer.
i wouldn't use that if i were you.

Thanks Archon - I'll pull that plugin and also drop the sys_ticrate setting (kernel default HZ=100). Hopefully that will help things.

Here is something that helped out www.tacticalgamer.com 's NS server

By running Win HL booster 1.7 (or any booster)
Then following the directions at the link below.

    <a href='http://fragpad.net/EditModule.aspx?tabid=1&mid=333&def=News%20Article%20View&ItemId=16' target='_blank'>SERVER LAG FIX</a>

The results were too good to be true, It solved the problem where Ping boosters were not working and cut pings down to pre-steam levels. Map load times are almost half aswell. Pings are currently reaching down to the 20s and even lower, and no they dont live next to the server.

Give this a try even if you <span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'><span style='color:red'>dont/cant</span></span> run boosters, it will still help alot

    Emanon

PS- if you do use a pingbooster make sure you set the sleep time to 7ms so that your server wont be working too hard.

(Taken from steam forums, thank quicksilver for the find.)

All of the above it should be noted are windows based fixes. Thanks anyway but I am using linux <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->

yes but i am using windows...

ok then i changed that dll and set my sv_maxrate and minrate to 6500 and 2000

now it seems better but still a little laggy when full (like everyone goes up to 200+ ping) I cannot run ping booster on the server so any other good ideas?

Try setting your sys_ticrate to 10000... and sv_maxupdaterate is a little high try 40

Tried all of the above (that is relevant for linux), still no joy. Ping rockets once CPU usage hits the magical 86% - this usually happens 20 mins into the game and with 16 or more players (the specific CPU usage number may just be co-incidence but I've seen it several times ...).

The only option left to me is to drop player numbers once more - so far have dropped from 23-21-20 and now may drop to 18. I suspect that a P4 2.4 is still going to max out occasionally at 16 players though ...

Its all getting a bit depressing paying £x/month for the best hosting we can afford and then having to drop player numbers each relelase <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I suspect there is no holy grail answer to the lag and CPU usage issues but if anyone happens to find it then be sure to share please.

You probably have our server now haven. We were running 18 players with reserve slots on top of that. So at the very max it got to 20 players, but usually 18. That seemed to work well.

Ok, I removed adminmod and am using AMX now. Server is MUCH more stable and pings are MUCH lower. we'll see this weekend during high traffic time if this fixes things

I've had problems with the latest beta to. Actually, it must have done something with the network tcp/ip stack or something. When I ping the server from 6 hops away i get a 50-60% loss when the server is running with no players on it. When I stop the server it goes back to normal.

I can't se how ping bosting or sv_* settings can fix this problem.
I'm running a Dual 2ghz xeon and mandrake 9.2. No plugins.

    <b>update</b>

Suddenly now it's fine... Beets me!

Ta for the info Cheesy, you are probably right and I guess we might have your old server. I've dropped players to 18 so hopefully that will help ... I'll know more once I get some player feedback after the weekend.
