in the server list/browser, under "game type", extend the bar so you can see all of the name. it'll say what beta version it's running.
You want beta 3, nuff said (there are like 4 beta 2 servers left)
check: steam\steamApps\yourEmail\Half-Life\nsp (if this folder dosn't exist you need to reinstall starting at beta 1) If there is not a file in there called xfire_installer.exe, then you don't have beta 3, go, download, install (point the installer at (steam\steamApps\yourEmail\Half-Life DON'T ADD THE \nsp)
I took the 2 on top is this wrong please help <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->
1) Download and Install Steam.
2) Play Half-Life Ussing Steam (simply play the training mission from Half-Life)
3) Download and Install Beta 1 (<a href='http://www.fileplanet.com/files/130000/136099.shtml' target='_blank'>File Planet Link)</a>
4) download and install Beta 3 (<a href='http://www.natural-selection.org/downloads.html' target='_blank'>Use one of the links here for beta 3 patch</a>)
Play.
GL, if yuo have any problems, please post up as specific information as you can.

I am guessing you either jsut left off the .exe or your computer dosn't display them
this is a BAD thing, to fix it do this:
1) Open Up explorer (your file browser, aka my computer)
2) go to tools and "folder Options"
3) go to the View Tab
4) Uncheck the 'hide file extensions for known file types'

And as for WHY you should...
well it is basicaly a good idea to be able to see file extensions, it can protect against certain virii (if you see a file names yadayada.jpg.exe it was some one trying to hide an exectuable as a jpeg)
