The 'official' Ns Im?

<div class="IPBDescription">Probably not what you think...</div> See, I've noticed the whole X-Fire thing bundled with the latest Beta patch. Fair enough.

But also today, I decided to update my forum profile here to include the new website I'm setting up, and I noticed something else... alongside the fields to pub in your Yahoo, MSN etc messenger names, there's a field for a thing called 'Integrity Messenger'. Huh?

This in itself probably wouldn't be that suspicious.,.. except there's no field For X-Fire... And if Flayra's getting behind THAT, then why make special forum profile provision for Integrity Messenger but not X-Fire?

In short; what gives? Are we going to wind up having a community split between the IM and XF users? What IS Integrity Messenger anyway? (Seems to be some kind of catch-all multi-messenger with it's own system added too.)

    WTH is the point of X-fire anyways?

    We already have Steam. So X-fire can kiss my you know what and burn.

    Integrity Messenger is something that the Invision Board crew 'bundled' in a way... which wasn't received too well either.

    At first I thought X-Fire was a nifty IM client that integrated into the game and popped up instant messages in the game itself, the messages appearing as in-game chat text. But I checked out their FAQ:

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->·  What happens to the IMs my friends send me when I’m playing a game?
    When you’re playing your favorite game, nothing’s worse than having your screen overrun with a message window. Xfire lets you know someone wants to chat by playing a small sound, and then stores the messages sent to you until you get out of the game. Once you return to your desktop, the window will pop up with all the messages you’ve received.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    It seems totally worthless. I've been known to play NS for 8 hours or more when I'm not working... Coming back to the IMs after that long is pointless.

    And besides, *all* other messengers behave that way, or can be tweaked to do so. :S

    Go trillian. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    XFire is an 'Instant Message' application for gamers. It shows to all buddys on your list, what game you are playing, from Starcraft to BF1942. It was put in as a means of getting more people to notice Natural-Selection. Say your buddy was playing Diablo, and wanted to send you a message. It would tell him what game you were playing, therefore in theory sparking an interest of that particular game and expanding the NS Community.

    In short... XFire is a way to spread NS

    and also it was found to NOT CONTAIN SPYWARE.... HURRAY!

    Well those were the only positive things I could find about it just from reading this thread...

    GG XFire? <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    What are the draw backs to XFire?

    More and more IM clients on my system. I would prefer they integrate such functions into open source clients already available such as GAIM. Having extremely different varients of clients is irritating to maintain and is a waste of bandwidth.

    Nothing, really. You just have a little bit of extra RAM consumption that you probably won't even notice if you have 512MB of RAM or more, and an extra systray icon. I'm running it and waiting until, hopefully, there is a Trillian plugin.

    If you need universal client, use miranda IM, it doesnt have own protocol but instead allows you to run protocols you normally use. (Im using it for ICQ and IRC, but it supports AOL, MSN and many more too, plus has ton of plugins and is open-source project...)

    I always set my away message to:

    'Can't talk right now, I'm playing Natural Selection! Care to join me? Check it out at <a href='http://www.natural-selection.org'' target='_blank'>http://www.natural-selection.org'</a>

    Isn't that just as good?

    It should be. I do the same, save for the URL, and I tell my friends personally about it. Hell, I got three of my local friends addicted to it.
