does umbra hold bullets at point blanc range? For example u r really close to an shotgunner, would u take full damage or just the amount of pellets who were not "filtered".
Umbra itself doesn't actually block anything. What happens is that when you stand inside an umbra cloud you change into "umbra'd" mode. While you are in this mode a percentage of the bullets that hit you will do no damage and make a thud noise instead.
As for the shotgun example, lets put this into numbers. Let's pretend the shotgun fires 10 pellets and the umbra blocks 1/2 bullets. If the shotgunner fires once at a single alien in a spore cloud, and hits with every single pellet, then 5 will do damage to the alien and the other 5 will do no damage and produce a loud thudding noise. If the shotgunner fires once at 2 aliens sitting in a spore cloud, and hits the first alien with 6 pellets and the second one with 4, then only 3 will damage the first alien and only 2 will damage the second alien , while the other 5 pellets do no damage and thud instead. Should any pellets miss both aliens completely and hit yet another alien on the other side of the umbra cloud, it will take damage from every single pellet that hits it because it is not in "umbra mode".
It's for that reason that it doesn't matter where you fire from, but only whether or not the alien is inside the cloud area. Hope this answers your question

You forgot to emphasize the probability principle. Umbra blocks 66% of the time, 33% of bullets/pellets should still do damage. However, probability doesn't exactly work that way. You could be lucky or unlucky. There are 2 outcomes, you're either hit or you are not hit.
With 33% probability, the first bullet has 1/3 chance of hitting you. The chance of two bullets hitting you consecutively is (1/3)x(1/3) = 1/9 " three bullets consecutively is 1/(3^3) = 1/27
If there are 8 pellets in a shotgun shell, then the probability of you taking full damage from them (if all connect with your umbraed self) is 1 in every 6561 shots. Now, sometimes you end up taking full damage from either a shotgun shell or from some 20 consecutive bullets from another weapon. You're either unlucky or there is some kind of glitch with umbra.

It would also be interesting to know who determines if you are in umbra or not... is it the server, the shooter or the target. From the number of times I get killed after shooting umbra just before I arrive, and the number of times I hear "thuds" after I left the umbra cloud, it would seem to be determined by the shooter. So fighting a really lagged guy requires you to drop the umbra early...

I think radius and range should increase, so aliens have an easier time to stay in the cloud. To offset this the blockrate shold decrease to maybe 50%. So it would easier to use and not extreamly powerful.

Umbra is extreamlly powerful.
