Those 3 screenshots were not taken by me. They were taken by 9of12[BORG] who is stuck with a poor Radeon 7500 or something as equally terrible.

    Hmm... yes i do.

Nah this monitor probably doesn't. It might get that high at something like 640x400.... but who wants to play a 21 inch monitor in that low of a resolution?

QUOTE

Also, the balance issues are still terrible. Magriders are vastly superior to Vanguards now, simply because those playing for a while actually know how to use a magrider: just strafe around a lot, the arcing projectile has NOTHING on a hitscan tank weapon. They both take about the same shots to kill, and the fact that the magrider is a much harder to hit target means it can easilly best a vangaurd.

I will agree with you on that, but the arcing vanguard shots are more powerful than the magrider shots if I am correct. And oh yes do I absolutely hate magriders. They always seem to be floating in wacky directions.

Actually I despise all Vanu. I absolutely hate fighting them. I'd rather fight the Terrans anyday, they are a much easier group to destroy if you ask me.

That's what the surge implant is for. I have no problems getting up close and personal with these people.

Finally joined up with borg's outfit today, had loads of fun including holding a base in the middle of a 3 way battle.

And Talesin: I personally don't recomend getting FFXI, for me it got boring since it's just click and let your character fight for you, and it didn't really even feel like a real world, AC2 even had that. On the good side though was the you learn skills/get stronger as you go on instead of just pumping stats, the game puts stats in for you. The skill chains were a nice little thing as well as the weaknesses of monsters.

Also Sonic: Yes.... FP... that was the bad part of it.

After you assault the same base for the fifteenth time, you come to the conclusion that there's really not too much to the game. When I played, I joined D2A when it was only about 80 players. Then they started the mass recruitment. I actually had to turn off the outfit chat since it was all spam about guys trying to cyber with the "girls".

I have to put this game pretty high on my "I wish I had spent my time playing something else" meter. A crappy community, repetitive and uninspiring gameplay, and "advanced tactics" that consist of simply zerging everything got real old real fast.

so far, I couldn't put it better myself. played planetside for a day now... and I must say I'm hella UNimpressed... it's like Tribes 2, but much less inspired, much less intuitive, much less interesting, and much more spammy... and I truly SUCK at it, to boot. I probably killed 5 people in my 6 or so hours of playing, and died probably 35 times... no clue what I'm doing so wrong, so it's extra frustrating. I'm good at NS, BF1942 (which has a MUCH more advanced flight system), UT2k3... but I get creamed in planetside...

first I picked the uni-max certification, figuring I'd last a while in that big armor. boy was I wrong. I lose 1 on 1 to most infantry, even in the anti-infantry suit. so I traded that in to pilot a reaver. I can't even come close to killing anyone with that. takes about 10 minutes to fly from the sanctuary to the front lines, and then about 7 seconds to be destroyed. what a waste of my life.

I don't want to give up on this game yet. anyone have any advice? what could I be doing so wrong? what certs are good for a newbie? any good websites with newbie advice out there?

I have a lot of advice:

    FIRST PIECES OF ADVICE

If you have not done this already, you need to play Operation Flashpoint, America's Army, and ultimately, Halo in order to understand a few key features involved with PlanetSide. I know those might sound like some tasks to achieve, but heck, even looking into sorts of Military Methodology in how to develope a good sense of huge environments, is probably the best course to take.

I make mention to Operation Flashpoint because of the open ability to actually look at Terrain and how the AI uses it--you can gain theoritical examples of combat through random units fighting it out in specific areas you designate. You can also participate in these battles to gain a sense on how quickly they work with their targets and put them down so quickly. With this in mind (and some others you'll learn on the way), it will allow you a realistic approach on how combat is waged--and gives a lending hand on how to distinct immediate threats, then move onto a closer ones.

America's Army I also discuss, because it allows an even greater study on how infantry combat is waged. Copelled with Operation Flashpoint's full open environments of unrestricted engagements, and America's Army ability to train you in how to engage targets, how to operate weapons, control recoil etc., gives you a much reinforced ability to be a better soldier. With these two games you learn some key concepts that are always constant in PlanetSide:

    You get this:

    *How Armored Warfare is waged
*Infantry Tactics (in all sorts of ranges)
*Advantages and Disadvantages (times, places, sounds etc.)

And You also develop the abilities to:

    *Analyzing the Situation
*Acting on the Situation based on what your equiped or trained with
*Using quick thinking from previous learned examples, cough*OFP,AA, to engage targets quickly and effectively to the means you could provide
*Not fearing death, and providing instant support/fire discipline to those who need it
*Close Cooperation with other people--if you get bored of this quickly, just drop PlanetSide altogether.
*Watch how targets move and initiate themselves when engaging your allies
*Providing yourself in your situation, anytime, anywhere with an advantage your enemy does not have

    etc.

Lastily, Halo allows for a more arcadey more compact version of PlanetSide. With this, and the other studies provided, you learn how the style of other players impacts the advantages present ingame. You also learn how to Operate very effectively in CQB, and by playing through the Halo Campaign on Harder levels, you learn to keep your head down and conserve yourself to better situations.

Another thing, with all of these games and repeated free-forum thought about them, you can flow freely in PlanetSide to the degree you are able to effectively use or exploit tricks, tactics, and classes that not many other people know to do.

I played PlanetSide for nearly 20 minutes, and I got 16 kills and only died twice. I'm not intending to brag, but with the features presented above, and my totals provided--by conserving yourself and actually having the will to give yourself to situations your not normally used to, you produce some very interesting results.

MAX's are easy to take down--they're only good on supported advances.

Also remember you have recoil--and unlimited amounts of it. Choose firing positions to help yourself play better, and use the terrain to your advantage. Dont go out into the open, and when you make a kill, move to give support elsewhere. Staying in one place is just begging to be killed.

I would provide lengths and lengths and lengths more--but I'm pretty sure half way through me shutting down the internet, you'd probably die of boredom.

But anyway, those are my thoughts.

As for the bugs that everyone is complaining about--I have yet to run into one.

My COMPUTER CHOKES LIKE A HUNGRY CALF ON ITS MOTHER'S HANGING, DROOPING, COW UTTERS OF MILKNESS in huge battles--but concealed ones where its at most, only 50 on 50, or 70 on 70, my computer can handle it (roughly, it has some lag [my computer cant handle too much in one area].

Its never closed out of PlanetSide yet as a result--and you'll never believe what I have to run it, BUT freaking BITE ME IF YOU DONT BELIEVE IT. IT freaking SUCKS.

500Mhz Pentium III Processor with 512 SDRAM (Crossair Sticks) SB SoundLive! 5.1 Sound Card, with a Vertigo GeForce 4 MMX440 64MB RAM Video Card.

I have to run PlanetSide on the lowest details, but I dont complain one bit about the visuals. More or less what I complain about, is me going into huge battles. My computer can run this game, but its FPS drops like murder charges to OJ Simpson.

Also, if you encountered some bugs in the Beta, redownload PlanetSide and I gaurentee you half of those bugs are gone. Another good method of troubleshooting PlanetSide, is to tweak your system outside of PlanetSide to make a few things run better.

*Removed color. It's for emphasis, NOT giving yourself a shiny, stand-out post. Welcome to the boards, don't do that again. -Talesin*

When you first start a new character, GO INTO TRAINING. Pick up every weapon in the shooting range at least once (including the MAXes)... most you don't even have to fire, but for each you get EXP. You can easily pick up 1-3 BR this way. Then, go to the other side... vehicles. For each one you pilot, you guessed it, more EXP. And for those with turrets or gunner positions, hop out and get in... even more EXP. Should total around 3-4 BR by this point, going through everything. Now go into the HART center and look at all the spinny things. Probably will score ANOTHER BR by the time you're done and have HARTed in to an action area.
Don't forget to sit in emplaced turrets (wall turrets, gun tower turrets) that aren't in the VR training.. you get EXP for that as well. And looking at command consoles. And learning about matrixers. By the time you're done, you should be BR 5 or 6, with a chunk of change to spend on your certs... without even needing to fire a single shot. ^_^

    Other advice:
    1) A UniMAX cert is your best bet for early levels. Antipersonnel usually is the way to go.

    2) Stay with a group. Preferably a Squad... after all, EVERYONE in a Squad gets the same amount of EXP whenever one person kills an enemy... and that value is NOT lowered from what you'd get soloing. So in a Squad, your EXP goes up a LOT faster.

    3) Do NOT solo, unless you have a Sniper or Cloaking cert. Even then, it's best to either be a forward scout/hacker or a rear guard. This goes extra for MAXes, who can't hack doors to get in and deal with the fleshlings (preferably non-MAX) hiding inside.

    4) A MAX can be killed by one infantry rocket. If they aim well, you go down. Simple as that. Try to hide behind corners... and good luck, MAXes aren't that manouvrable. Normally they're best as secondary fighters (allowing the point men to take the rockets to the face, leaving you to kill the now-spent rocketeers) or mainlines if you're taking a gun, air, or other waypoint tower.

    5) Engineers and medics get NO experience for plying their trade, AFAIK. Sure, it's good to have one... but only if you're sticking with an Outfit as a dedicated Med/Gearhead.

    6) Flight is tricky, and others have had far more practice than you. Stay away from air vehicles unless you want to devote hours each day to learning how to fly them just right. Otherwise, you blow up real good.

The rest is up to you... I've gotten one character up to BR14 with a UNIMAX. At which point you CAN sell it if you want to and go for stuff like Advanced Hacker, Cloaking, Wraith, Advanced Engineer, and so on. Personally, I stick with the MAX, take out infantry, and avoid getting mown down by sloppily-piloted Magriders and nasty Prowler drivers.

That or grab Advanced Hacker, and the ATV cert, then load up your inventory with plasma grenades and a shotty or Scatterpistol (stolen from a NC corpse... er.. soldier). It's loads of fun to hack an enemy door, stay to the side so the hail of bullets/missiles will go right past, and chuck two or three plasgrens through the door, and swap over to a shotgun to pound any that run out the door, on fire. Or if they don't, just keep tossing in more grenades. They'll eventually either come out, run away, or all die. ^_^ It's apparently EXTREMELY frustrating, as the fire brings down the Hardened Exo to the level where one shotty round to the face will take them down, unless they run out IMMEDIATELY.

Then, at least on Vanu, there's the Lasher... supposedly INCREDIBLY deadly, especially to crowds of enemies. Never bothered grabbing it to try it out, but to each their own.

thanks for the advice guys... my kill-to-death ratio is getting better... I've been getting better as a reaver pilot but I may switch that out again... I'm tempted by things like hacking and engineering but since I can't afford them both I dunno what to pick. BR6 now... maybe I should try out MAX yet again...

Dammit you've got me addicted now!

I've got two characters, one grunt shooty char with Heavy assault, and getting Exo-armour as soon as possible, and a pilot/driver/engineer char with Air Cavalry and engineering.

Having read your post i'm considering taking a MAX instead of the engineering (i'm definately losing engineering anyway) and I would agree that being a pilot is something that takes a LOT of practice.

A few reaver tips I have picked up:

-The Reaver can NOT go up against enemy bases, you will get shot out of the sky in 2 seconds over an enemy base, if not by the turrets then by the anti-air MAX's lurking within

-The Reaver is NOT a long ranged weapon, it's chaingun has massive recoil, and it's missiles can't hit anything at a distance eithe

-The Reaver is NOT an interceptor, it is a gunship. Use it to rake groups of infantry with chaingun fire, or use your missiles against light vehicles. A Reaver can easily kill anything as heavy as a lightning, REAVER + LIGHT VEHICLE = DEAD LIGHT VEHILCE (of course this doesn't count for skyguards you nubs)

-Do NOT under ANY circumstances go one-on-one with a mosquito. Yes, they're smaller and dont have missiles, but trust me, MOSQUITO + REAVER = DEAD REAVER. The mosquito's changun has NO recoil, you will be blown to little bits. On that note you might want to consider taking a mosquio now and again

-Flying in between trees is a very silly idea

-Saying "hey watch this" and then proceeding to crash into the bridge you were attempting to fly under is an even sillier idea

-If you want to win a one-on-one with another reaver, just make sure you have the drop on him. If he sees you first, you won't stand a chance

If anyone has any other tips, i'd love to hear them, i'm not claiming to be a master of the reaver by any stretch of the imagination. Piloting DOES get dull now and again, but then I just switch to my shooty character. The best bit about flying to me is getting shot down, but ejecting and making it back to base alive, makes me feel that I cheated death. And taking down a fully-loaded galaxy is always fun too

Be happy. Before you couldn't even have chars on two different empires on the same server.

Wall turrets are deadly if you're peppering infantry. VS scum set up an AMS just outside a base we were holding and I racked up at least 11 of them as they materialized

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but I wanted to read and reply to a thread about Planetside. Besides, it seems there's a few topics active already that have at least mentioned Planetside. Bringing back one that focuses entirely on PS couldn't hurt.

Anyhow, I've been trying out Planetside for the past few days, and I'm ... well, a great deal less impressed than I was expecting to be. From the screenshots, the reviews, and the high-praise comments in other topics on these very forums, I was expecting a game I'd willingly provide a credit card number for.

All I've got so far is remorse for wasting so much time downloading the 7-day trial.

I tried playing as a driver, figuring that'd be relatively easy to play and would fit in well with just about any attack force. I'm quite inexperienced with these tactical battle games, so I wanted something that would be impossible to screw up. You know the drill - got a butch tank and drove it around a bit, but then I got blown up by a zippy little aeroplane. Found out the name of that flying beast was "Mosquito".

    That's just too precious.

Then I tried being the zippy little pilot. Managed to get the hang of the controls after a few hours in the simulator, but got blown out of the sky by a guy with some kind of me-seeking missile launcher. I was only just after arriving to help with an attack against of one of those outpost tower things. I mean really, we already outnumbered them and I was just joining in to get some battle experience with my zippy little aeroplane.

Finally, I used my third, and last, character spot to be a walking block of fire-spitting steel. Got the certifications to get the big guns and cool toys, got some weapons knowledge in the simulator, then joined in a well-diversified group of my fellow bretheren as they went out into the world to conquer, pillage, and make things blow up. This guy didn't get killed (much), but I was bored as all hell. "Walk here, blow that up. Walk there, kill him. Hop in the transport, the transport gets blown up."

Gee, I'm sensing a common theme here. Do the trial-version players have a big bullseye on them or something?

I tried to find something I'd love about this game, but couldn't. The zippy pilot thing was a lot of fun, but I'm hardly willing to dedicate the next solid week of my life learning how to fly the thing.

It's a fun game, has a lot of diversity, and the teamwork aspect is top-notch. It's simply just not my kind of game. Or maybe it's just that trial-version bullseye thing has me completely turned off from PS.

Oh man, this may get me flamed but I remember almost everyone just going nuts on the last day of the beta when all the accounts were being wiped. It was insane, I was playing under the Vanu Sovereignty, and the griefing was really out of control even in the sanctuary, but it was hilarious...

I must admit I griefed my share that day and with my Galaxy cert it was pretty easy. I used to join squads needing a Galaxy pilot and load everyone up. I'd fly in the direction of our destination, then divebomb into the ocean killing everyone aboard. It was pretty bad, after a while I had so many grief points that I couldn't use weapons and could only fly at around 7 mph. Despite this people still wanted me to shuttle them around in that thing. It was unbelievable that day, it was as if the world was about to end and all the laws of society broke down in a spectaclar display of human evil.

I have two characters: Narfwak, a Vanu on Emerald, and Marfwak, a TR on Emerald. I will likely reactivate my account if I can get a new system; that's still in limbo, so it might not happen ( ).

Edit: As for your negative experience. . . well, I don't want to flame you, so I won't. The game does have a bit of a learning curve, but it also offers a unique experience that you cannot get from any other game on the market. I can't tell you whether it's for you, though - some people just don't like it that much. In any case, if you still want to try to get as much out of your trial as possible, try to find some people that you can team up with. The game isn't any fun alone, and playing a support role in a squad can be very satisfying.

Hey, us Vanu are techno-nazis! Not dirty commies!

    YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED

To anyone considering trying out PlanetSide, I'll provide this link to an event planned by the TR (The scum they are) on Werner

    http://psforums.station.sony.com/ps/board/...essage.id=14862

Can just show what happens with inter-outfit events.

Btw there's only one empire to fight for and that's the Vanu Sovereignty!

    Lancer = teh win!
