I've played my first game of DDR...
Today at work was an all day party as yesterday was a big deadline for the year that would take more effort to explain than I want to, but suffice to say Jan 4 is the biggest deadline for the entire year.

So anyway, we had a party-day pretty much all day long. We had a game of Pictionary and someo ther stuff.. But later in the afternoon my boss Scott brought out DDR. Apparently he's a really big DDR freak and so were a few others in the company.

Up till this time my only experience w/ DDR was laughing at those who played it, a lot. And I mean a whole lot. Nobody else had ever played it before though, so it was a riot watching people make a fool of themselves.

So I actually tried DDR and the very scary thing is its actually pretty fun. Scared the crap out of me that I was actually having fun playing it, and also that I found myself to improve very quickly. If only the music weren't so crappy... There should be an all video games DDR, that'd pwn.. wait, what am I saying? what the @#$%? Its taken me over already. :O Help! :O

So in summary, DDR is like Alcohol. If you're at a party, its okay and can even be entertaining, however if you're all alone then its just sad. :P

DDR is still around? I figured it would be gone by now since it was just a ploy by the japanese to get camera phones and sms messaging into the US.

We our DDR equilalant out in my work-place back in the summer.
My boss's 2 eldest daughters (age 10 + 13) are utterly amazing at it.
We had great fun playing on it but didn't make much business due to
    the distraction

Back in the Summer someone sells us a Sony Eye-Toy for the PlayStation2. I've seen them on the E3 video and never really thought much about them.... until now. Now, as with all items purchased from the public, they have to be tested. Usually my mate Sam would jump at the chance to get his blad mug on the t.v screen.... but he's off fishing somewhere. There's only myself and Justin there who can test the damn thing and Justin has been moaning about a sore shoulder for weeks.... damn.

So I take the game and camera out of the box and wire it all up.
Switch on the PlayStation2, pray that it explodes while starting up but no such luck.

I leave it switched on and running its demo for 10 minutes while I wait for the shop to empty out.
When the shop is finally empty I step up into the camera, adjust my hair and wave my hand abit to select a game.
I select "Keep-Up's"... I played Football (soccer) alot in my youth and feel confident of this game and wait for it to load up. When its loaded I watch as the ball falls to the ground.... then the 2nd ball is throw in and I use my shoulder to keep it up in the air... rock on.
After 2/3 more balls i've got the hang of it and the 3 minute timer is quickly worn down as I juggle the ball nimbly and replace all the names on the Hi-Score board with the name "poo" (Much to Justin's delight).

5 Minutes later i'm sick of doing keep-ups. So I return to the game selection game and I see the words "Kung-Foo".... this should rock.

The game basically involves you standing in the middle of the screen and slapping/kicking/punching these little dudes away as they approach from the sides of the screen. If they get too close you loose a "life". Simple.
As with the footy game it takes me a life or 2 before I've got a routine up and running and am Fung-Foo'ing the crazy panda things like Bruce Lee.

Now i really enjoyed playing this one, especially the bonus stage where I got to break planks of wood with my elbow (which eventually became my forehead and then my left nipple). I'm enjoying it soo much that i've started to say "peow!" and "pow!" and "wha-crack!" like the really old Batman show, to add to the masterful Kung-Fo moves oozing from my stance.

I get the high-score, I think to myself "I could do with a coffee", so I turn around and as I just about to say to Justin "cool that mate!" I notice the crowd...... There's about 8 people of different ages, all gathered round me in a nice neat circle that had been watching me. My jaw drops and they start clapping... I take a bow and then rush red-faced into the back of the shop and make myself a coffee. I stay there til 6pm and then go home.

    What a day.

fancay. I wish blockbuster had that eye toy thing- I just can't wait till the next version of the software comes out: Its going to install itself on the hard drive, and games that are compatable with it will have cool stuff. Like imagine holding a paper-towel holder, calibrate it so it recognizes it as a sword, and bam- you've got the best hack n' slash RPG ever- where you actually hack and slash things.

DOOMeh, give yourself a pat on the back for opening up a whole new world
The playstation2->USB adapter finally got shipped to me yesterday, so now I can plug in a playstation dance mat I've had since December to play StepMania. Free software download, free songs download. You can get the songs from the official arcade machines or others that people have made "stepfiles" for. (Stepfile = thing that lets StepMania know which arrows come at which point in the .mp3 or .ogg).

You want old game music? There's plenty out there. People have made stepfiles for songs from Tetris, Mario, Zelda, Castlevania, Guilty Gear X, Rival Schools: United by Fate, Final Fantasy, Sonic games, Parasite Eve, Doom (such as the track called "Synthetic Demon," seems to be E1M5), Halo, Mega Man, Bubble Bobble, Pacman, and countless dozen other songs whose games-of-origin I can't even guess at based on their names. Plenty of DDR fansites have them via bittorrent or normal download.
