    actually -- linux + steam = suximus maximus

    ns linux might be coded correctly for linux, but steam is not. Them pathetic excuses for programmers @ steam, just ported windows steam to linux, making it for anyone with a server on linux with 2400XP or lower to lag to the max on any mod.

    Personally datacentres need to step up and provide windows servers at same cost coz they'll make a killing.

    Anyhow played ns:c to death, looking forward to tribes2:vengence now <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Zippy he wasn't talking about steam server but running steam on Linux using wine, a bit to laggy for my taste. And since I’m having some problems with ventrilo under Linux it’s not much of an option anyways.
    However it's sad that valve doesn't take a bigger concern about us penguins out there wanting to get rid of this os called Windows which is kept only for gaming.

    valve does things the proprietry way to maximise profits.
    It's much sadder that those who aren't doing it for money go the same route (but without even the profit).

    My framerate is extremely choppy especially when drawing MDLs to the screen in Linux. Have you experienced the same problem? If so, how did you fix it. Also, could you post both sound sections of your ~/.wine/config file and what sound card and drivers you use. Thanks! I, too, want to play in Linux! <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Can anyone sum up the gaming performance differences between using Linux and Windows? I always assumed Linux would run it slower, but id like to know for sure. Thx ahead.

    overpowerings question about gaming performance on a linux box and maybe for those others with lesser performance.

    in the manual you give the order to start half-life with:
    ./wine/fake_windows/SIERRA/Steam/SteamApps/[youremail]/counter-strike/cstrike

    for those who run linux try the command *man nice* or *man renice*

    try as root/superuser/admin:
    nice -n -19 ./wine/fake_windows/SIERRA/Steam/SteamApps/[youremail]/counter-strike/cstrike
    and you will see it gets the highest priority, i think higher than the cpu or my j.

    you can try this, maybe your system (or you) will crash and maybe not <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    if you want an even better performance you can renice the other less important services like the sshd and ftpd, for hlds you can do nice -n -19 ./hlds -game blabla, actually for all services.
